The Project

The Voyager’s Legacy is a short film drama written and directed by rangatahi filmmaker Bailey Poching. It centres on three Samoan children in 1970’s Ponsonby who escape their increasingly frightening reality into an imaginary fantasy world.

Set during the time of the Dawn Raids, The Voyagers Legacy follows the three youngest children of a Samoan family, as they reimagine their bustling Ponsonby home as a magical, whimsical fairytale world of swords and sorcery.

HOW WE GOT HERE

During lockdown 2020, I pitched The Voyager’s Legacy to Māoriland and was selected to participate in the Ngā Pakiaka Incubator Programme (NPIP). I participated in a number of development workshops through NPIP from our family home to make The Voyagers Legacy the best film possible. Through NPIP I’ve received partial funding from Māoriland and the NZ Film Commission to make the film.

In December we were able to shoot a portion of the Voyager’s Legacy - but to finish it - we need your help!

The money raised in this campaign will assist with the cost of lenses and lighting gear, and hopefully, we can raise enough money for essential post-production costs.

ABOUT ME

Talofa! O lo’u igoa Bailey Poching and I am the writer/director of The Voyager’s Legacy. I am of Māori and Samoan descent. Growing up I always felt a strong impulse to tell stories - be it drawing my own home-made comic books or writing short stories. I remember watching an old French movie in Film Studies at 16 and being blindsided when it made me cry. I realised that a film, when made with conviction, can reach across boundaries of time, culture and language. My dream is to offer something of my own experience and to tell new, different stories about brown Pacific people.

OUR TEAM

Our team includes Ryan Alexander Lloyd (Cinematographer), Ian Leaupepe (1st AD), Samson Rambo, and Ngā Pakiaka! (Oriwa Hakaraia, Kararaina Ngatai Melbourne). We received support from Tainui Stephens, Ricardo Giraldo, Desray Armstrong, Karakwenhawi Zoe Hopkins, Ianeta Le'i and Bird Runningwater.

The Voyager's Legacy is produced by Libby Hakaraia, Matilda Poasa and Madeleine Hakaraia de Young for Māoriland Productions.

The Voyager's Legacy is part of the Ngā Pakiaka Incubator Project (NPIP). NPIP was developed by Māoriland during Lockdown to support rangatahi filmmakers to produce their first professional short films. The first eight in NPIP are Aree Kapa, Oriwa Hakaraia, Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne, Kararaina Ngatai-Melbourne, Te Waiarangi Ratana, Bailey Poching, Tiana Trego Hall and Te Mahara Tamehana. All eight filmmakers have personal creative goals to become feature filmmakers and share Indigenous stories on the big screen. Under NPIP, this talented rangatahi have received one-on-one mentorship from industry experts from across the Indigenous filmmaking sector, craft development opportunities, workshops, and industry placements.
