The Project

The Green Room is an artist-run initiative, which serves to provide artists a blank slate to project their creative pursuits on. Our primary focus is in furthering a sense of community within the arts, this will see an emphasis on exhibiting works by practising creatives in Ōtautahi accompanied by a range of one off kōrero. We believe the distinct lack of artist-run spaces within this city has a negative impact on the ability for artists to show their work and gain exposure. By developing this initiative we hope to bring together our community, support our local artists and inspire others to do the same.

The Team

The Green Room is run by emerging artists looking to carve out more space for creatives in Ōtautahi.

The Funding

We want to create a space that brings you exciting and new exhibitions. We want to give artists the freedom to express their ideas and be the point of contact that connects you to their work. Contributions to this space will help to cover the costs that will make all of this possible

All raised funds will go towards:

Opening Nights:

  • Kai
  • Drinks
  • Print costs

Installation:

  • Artist expenses
  • Equipment
  • Materials
  • Unintended Expenses

Running Costs:

  • Maintenance
  • Repairs
  • Specialised Artwork Requirements

The Details

The Green Room is located at Toi Auaha and is positioned just outside of the main building. We will be hosting exhibitions throughout the first half of the year, beginning in early January till late June. Our program will see six distinct exhibitions across this period. Simultaneously, scattered throughout this timeframe we will host one of kōrero events. This will see an established artist or mentor in conversation around the navigation of art worlds and sustaining creative practices.

The Impact

The Green Room will act as a place where people come together and build relationships with one another. This will be a space that lifts up our emerging artists, helping them gain an audience as well as connecting them with more established artists who can help guide their practice. We believe in the power of conversations or kōrero. We will start a dialogue about the need for projects like ours, the need for people to build connections and the need for nurturing our young artists coming out of school.
