THE DOCUMENTARY
Christchurch couple Ben and Kylie always wanted a big family - six kids to be exact! With four at home between the ages of 4-14, they fell pregnant with baby #5 and learned they were having a boy.
Arlo (4), was fizzing to be a big brother! Maia (14) couldn't wait to have another little baby to snuggle and comfort. Kaiden (12) and Azalea (9) asked every day, "Is baby coming yet?"
After 40 weeks of anticipation and excitement, the day came; Kylie met with her midwife at Rangiora Hospital for a stretch and sweep.
The midwife makes a devastating discovery...baby has no heartbeat.
Kylie is rushed to Christchurch Women's Hospital where, in the Garden Room with Ben at her side, she delivers a beautiful baby boy. They name him Grayson. He never takes a breath.
The Garden Room movie picks up their story here with raw, emotive interviews of Ben, Kylie and their kids sharing about their grief...and hope.
THE CREATIVE TEAM
The Garden Room is a one-woman-crew film by Kirsty Cameron, that's me! I am the sole creator from producing to editing and I was fortunate to have the volunteered support of a few talented friends along the way. Creating films that evoke emotion and discussion is my passion in life.
THE ASK
This film is a feature length passion project and entirely self-funded. All footage has been filmed, but there is a financial barrier moving into post-production.
The Garden Room has been selected to air in 2024 on Shine TV New Zealand, GOOD Australia, and will be entering festivals - as such the film will need a broadcast finish.
Donations raised will go towards post-production colour and sound with experienced New Zealand artists. All donors to this campaign will be named in the credits!
**Donations qualify for a tax credit: NZ income earners qualify for a 33% tax credit on their donations from the IRD with a receipt automatically provided by The Arts Foundation (as The Arts Foundation is a registered charity) for any donation made.
THE HOPE
As a filmmaker, my hope for The Garden Room was never just to tell a story; it was to open a dialogue. Through the lens of this family's poignant journey, we delve deep into the pain and grief of stillbirth, and their journey of healing. By bravely confronting the subject of stillbirth, I hope to dispel the silence that surrounds it, to lift the veil of stigma that has shrouded this topic for far too long.
The Garden Room invites audiences to empathise, to connect. To not only honour the families who have experienced stillbirth but also foster a more compassionate and supportive society.
The Garden Room serves as a catalyst for change, a tribute to the strength of the human spirit, and a beacon of hope for all who have walked this challenging path.

Absolutely thrilled to announce you can watch The Garden Room anywhere in the world at thegardenroom.nz. Please do share and tell your friends!
Thank you again to every donor who raised the incredible $20,000 which allowed me to pay two industry professional post production artists. For me, this film was a 3 year unpaid passion project. When watching the film through the official website your support helps recognise the time, effort, and resources that went into creating, marketing, and releasing it.
Renting the film is just like buying a ticket at the cinema – it’s the best way to enjoy the art while supporting the person behind it.
I’m truly grateful for every purchase and for spreading the word! - Kirsty Cameron, Director
