An animated short film that asks the question: Is it possible to break up with your family?

We need your support to tell our story Only Human on Loading Docs’ award-winning short documentary platform. This is a deeply personal film about learning how to love, or leave, your family.

THE FILM

They say you can’t choose your family, but can you overcome irreconcilable differences with those you love the most? The youngest daughter of an unconventional Filipino family explores the complexities of communicating across countries, generations and the internet.

2020 has been the year of polarisation across the globe. People have found themselves at odds with close family members over everything from politics to religion, to whether COVID-19 is real.

Centred around the director, Mia, her siblings and their father, they explore the breakdown in their family‘s communication, the challenges of polarisation in the modern world, and what part the internet has to play in breaking them up.

THE TEAM

Mia Maramara is an emerging director, writer, and frequent Boosted donor. As a Filipino filmmaker working in New Zealand, Mia‘s projects have always existed in the genre space. Only Human is her first foray into animation and a deeply personal topic that she has spent a lifetime trying to untangle. Producer Kate Goodwin has made all forms of animated and VFX content across the world for the past 10 years.

THE TARGET

As part of the Loading Docs initiative, we need to raise a minimum of $3,500 through Boosted. Stop-motion can be a costly process and most of our budget will go to animation production.

Once we reach our minimum target, it will unlock additional funding from Loading Docs. But, this is an all-or-nothing campaign. If we don’t reach our target, we get nothing! That’s why we need your help.

Loading Docs is an award-winning short documentary initiative to develop New Zealand filmmaking talent. Loading Docs is funded by NZ On Air with support from NZFC and Te Māngai Pāho.

Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy

When we started on Only Human, I had a script, a vision, and a fuzzy idea of where things were going to take us. “This is gonna be easy peasy lemon squeezy,” I said, hoping that Kate would eventually believe me if I said it enough times.

Two lockdowns, five weeks of animation, and seven re-writes later and here we all are. At the finish line. We couldn’t have started this absolute marathon without any of you, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you for all of your support.

I am terrified to launch this into the world. A small part of it is my artists’ ego, wishing I could have done better, or worked harder, or been a generally more talented person. But a bigger part of it is knowing that once this is out in the world, all the little secrets I’ve held in my heart will now exist out there for everyone to see, and hate, and comment on. Only Human is, after all, about communication failings in the era of social media. What could go wrong?

I take comfort in the hope that by sharing my story you will feel free to share yours too. I know I’m not alone in my struggles. No one’s life is perfect, and, by acknowledging this, I hope that you come away feeling and knowing that you are not alone either.
