Overview

Women about Sound are launching a new songwriting mentoring programme for women and gender diverse emerging musicians to develop their creative capability in songwriting and production in a safe and supportive space.

Participants will gain confidence and skills so they can access and direct songwriting and recording opportunities themselves in the future.  Contributing to the development of a more supportive and diverse music scene in Aotearoa.

We need your help to make this happen.

Who are we?

For the past four years, Women About Sound has hosted workshops and performance evenings to provide a safe space for women and gender diverse individuals to hone their ability in songwriting, a chance to learn a new skill, and gain experience and build confidence performing on stage.

Why this project?

Women About Sound was founded on the knowledge that the music industry is still under-represented by women and gender diverse musicians.  Feedback from participants of Women about Sound events has indicated that women and gender diverse musicians often feel intimidated in male-dominated spaces.  We want to address this by providing this new mentoring programme that is led by women and gender diverse songwriters, producers and audio engineers

Our programme comprises of:

  • Mentoring from highly skilled songwriters and producers to empower and enable participants in their songwriting and production skills through the development of an original song
  • An opportunity to record a demo of the original song.  Providing a  positive music recording experience with a supportive audio engineer
  • Collaboration between participants to help build networks
  • An opportunity to perform with fellow participants and share their music with the community

We have secured some funding for the project but not enough to ensure the project can go ahead.  We will use funds raised here to make up for the shortfall and ensure that the programme is the best it can be.

Funds raised will be used to help cover the costs of:

  • Hiring a recording studio
  • Payment for the audio engineer
  • Payment for the mentors

Thank you so much for your support.
