White Room On Wheels

Once upon a time there was an idea in an artist's head, which grew and grew and grew, until it became a reality, well not quite yet, but soon... with your help.

Q. What is White Room On Wheels?

A. It's a bike + artists + a city

The idea.

The idea was to take art making to the street, to make art more accessible to more people, by turning an electric cargo bike into a mobile art studio. What’s more, it would be available to anyone who wanted to make art.

The Impact.

We're on a quest to remove the barriers that art institutions create. The White Room On Wheels (WROW) will ensure that art making is equitable, inclusive and accessible to the people of Ōtautahi.

What we are asking for?

Your donation will be used to buy a second hand electric cargo bike, art materials and equipment, so we can get out and about making art.

We have already got together some equipment: 

• mobile projector
• art materials
• sound recording equipment
• cameras

As well as the bike, we need some other stuff: solar charger, worktables, chairs, picnic set and thermos flask, as artists do need to eat and drink.

How will this project help?

We work with artists who experience many barriers to participation in art and creative activities as well as opportunities to exhibit their work. Through our networks we know there are many others who face similar obstacles.

Supporting the White Room On Wheels will:

• provide opportunities for work to be produced and exhibited in new and innovative ways
• enable us to connect with new audiences
• help us build relationships with the art community across Ōtautahi
• make art

Who We Are.

The White Room Creative Space was developed in late 2014 in response to a growing need to foster and develop the creative talent of people supported by SkillWise. With its own dedicated space, it has become an exciting and successful place, where artists can explore and showcase their potential.

The White Room advocates for the artists inclusion in contemporary arts practice through supporting their art making, participation in exhibitions and other creative projects.

Recently we have begun a new outreach programme, which aims to increase access to, and taking part in, creative activities for people in Ōtautahi who experience barriers to participation. 

Who came up with this? 

Isaac Tait is an interdisciplinary artist, who has been using The White Room for the past three years. His initial idea for the project arose from the impact of not being able to access art and creative activities due to COVID restrictions. Having a way to make art that was not tied to a building provided a solution, one The White Room embraced and developed into the White Room On Wheels.
