Overview

Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre in Ōtautahi Christchurch, with guidance from our Māori Advisory Komiti, is activating a new Māori Creative Space onsite for the month during Matariki 2021, with a view to creating a permanent space.

TE HINONGA / THE PROJECT

Setting up a warm and inviting space, enabling local Māori creatives to learn and grow together in their respective arts and cultural practices, while developing opportunities and collaborations by working together and supporting one another. It will be a place to test new ideas and open new possibilities through a spirit of collaboration. The Matariki constellation provides a glow in the night sky over this period, carrying a message of hope and togetherness, which would be embodied in the Whare Tapere.

PURAKAU / THE STORY OF WHARE TAPERE

Whare Tapere historically were iwi community ‘houses’ of storytelling, dances, music, games and other entertainments, and were a feature of community life in Aotearoa and throughout the Pacific prior to the arrival of Europeans. In this context, it is “a space, collective or network for ngā toi Māori artists to share, develop and present collaborative work to audiences and communities.”

KO TĒNEI TONO: ĀWHINA MAI, TAUTOKO MAI / WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Your support enables Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre to host, equip, support and run the Whare Tapere for the four weeks of Matariki 2021, including the showing of collaborative work.

And even better - as part of the Boost Ōtautahi campaign, your donation to Whare Tapere will be matched dollar for dollar by the Rātā Foundation, up to $3,000. So, if you give $50, this is matched by an additional $50 from Rātā Foundation, making the total donation $100! And you can claim a 33% tax credit on your part of the donation. Magic.

NGĀ TĀNGATA / THE PEOPLE

The Māori Advisory Komiti at Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre in Ōtautahi Christchurch is Puamiria Parata-Goodall, Piri Cowie, Hohepa Waitoa, and Dr. Areta Wilkinson.

Ā MUA / THE FUTURE

We’d love to run the Whare Tapere as a feature of Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre - and after running the space over Matariki, we’d look at how to make it more permanent.
