Werk It

The Werk It Women's Podcast Festival is a gathering for women shaping the future of podcasting in New York, and I've been invited to attend!

I'm the producer, presenter and creator of sex and relationships podcast BANG!, which I released through Radio New Zealand as a freelancer last year. If you haven't heard it yet you can listen here and here.

I started the podcast because I had a feeling that people wanted to talk about sex and relationships in a real, no shame, no holds barred way.

Over 2 seasons we've heard from teenagers, 20-somethings, new parents, and grandparents, from people representing different cultural backgrounds and upbringings, from those who view sex and sexuality through the lens of a disability, and from many in rainbow/LGBTQIA+ communities.

We've covered important topics like sexuality education, consent, pre-colonial indigenous sexuality and gender norms, as well as infidelity, modern dating, adult virginity, premature ejaculation, sex after 60 and much more. We've also heard valuable advice from experts and sex therapists.

BANG! has done really well in the iTunes NZ podcast charts and has received a whole lot of coverage in media, including on a couple of best podcast lists in The Guardian UK. It was a finalist for Best Podcast in the New Zealand Radio Awards and won a bronze medal at the very fancy New York Festival Radio Awards.

But there is still so much to learn about how to collect, shape and deliver those stories well.

The Werk It Women's Podcast Festival is hosted by WNYC, makers of some of the world's best podcasts including Radiolab, Death, Sex & Money, and 2 Dope Queens.

They've offered me a scholarship to cover the costs of attending, and I have some money to put in myself, but as a freelancer and a mother of two I won't be able to get there on my own.
