The Project

Kia ora, I am Donna Demente, a visual artist who has been running an art gallery in Oamaru's Historic Precinct since 2002. I mostly sell my own work there: paintings, masks sculpture, jewellery, ephemera cards and souvenirs, all made by hand mostly onsite! My passion project involves hosting live music in the airy and acoustically delicious space an old grain warehouse affords, and since our opening night 18 years ago (when we had the Clean play and officially open the gallery live on National radio) we have hosted many of NZs premiere musical artists of the folk/dreampop/alt country and classical genres that so suit the ambience of the space. Walls filled with faces and eyes (my specialty) create a wacky additional audience and a surreal backdrop to enhance the listening experience.

We are hoping to raise funds to continue and extend our music hosting programme. With the tourism industry's downturn, revenue from gallery sales ,,(which covers costs associated with such activities) is under threat. We would also like to expand our 'reach' to include live-streaming of shows, recording (in conjunction with local studio 'Sublime') and a songwriters-in-residence program.

This Boosted campaign is part of a nationwide awareness drive under the banner of Boosted LIVE presents #SAVEOURVENUES.

Run by a dedicated committee of music lovers (including Reb Fountain, Matthew Crawley (Golden Dawn / Strange News, Lucy Macrae & Tom Anderson (Whammy Bar), Rohan Evans (The Wine Cellar) and Reuben Bonner (Banished Music)), the #SAVEOURVENUES team seek to unite in support of Aotearoa's live music venues and music scene. To raise awareness and funds, and trigger a national response strategy in support of a thriving musical culture in New Zealand.

#saveourvenues aim is to help generate support for crucial, original, small live music venues right across New Zealand, in cities and towns. And they are calling on everyone to help. Anyone can do it – artists, audience members, reviewers, techies, promoters – all of us. Please support your local venues. They need you.
