Overview
“Tiny Yellow” is a short film written by Maori actress & writer Cian Parker about living beyond the sudden unexpected death of an infant. It tells the story of Tu and Leah as they try to grapple with the misery and guilt felt after surviving such a horrific tragedy, and provides an intimate illustration of how to endure this particular type and magnitude of personal catastrophe.

Finding our cast
On 16 February, we auditioned 28 different actors to play Tu & Leah and then this past Saturday we called-back 11 actors (five men and six women) to read with one another in different configurations, and they were all amazing. Truly.

Now the hard part begins. Every single pairing we saw this weekend could work very well. I honestly wish we could do six different versions of it in fact. That would be such a fascinating study too - to see Cian's wonderful script as interpretted by six entirely different couples.
Truth be told, a version of this story being told intercut between six different couples saying the same lines would be such a powerful statement. It would show the universality of grief like this - how death and life touch us all, but how we all deal with it in our own individual way, and in our own time.
But alas, our budget is limited and we can only afford one pair of actors. As the LA-based film collective that I spent many years working with says "Quality = making the most of your resources", so that's what we'll do. I just need to decide which version of this story I want to tell at the expense of all the others.
I won't lie. Giving up at least five of those stories is gonna hurt, but that's what "Tiny Yellow" is about after all. Passing through our pain is a necessary part of life.
