Tikapa to Edinburgh

The Project
Tikapa is taking not one but two shows - Not in our Neighbourhood & The Moa Show - to Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2018 and one of Scotland's leading entertainment venues - Gilded Balloon.
And we need your help! It's a long way from lil old Aotearoa and this is a big deal for our small company to accept this wero. We have been partly funded by Creative New Zealand (chur CNZ!) but we still need to raise more because there is so much to cover from rehearsals to gaffer tape and light bulbs to lighting, projector and smoke machine hire to marketing stuff like flyers and posters - thousands of them! Any koha will be gratefully received.
Tikapa Productions is an award-winning, independent production company based in Wellington, committed to creating high quality entertainment and promoting social justice. Formed in 2011, Tikapa Productions has produced four shows that have toured the country, and are the creators of the highly sought-after Maori showband, The Maori Sidesteps. Tikapa is Jamie McCaskill, Kali Kopae and Sonia van der Heyden; joining us for this Edinburgh haerenga is writer/directer Craig Geenty and award-winning lighting designer Jennifer Lal.
Not in our Neighbourhood by Jamie McCaskill
Not in our Neighbourhood is a one woman show that follows the lives of three women living in a safe house of the Women's Refuge. A documentary maker is invited into the safe house to document their lives and we find that the women have very different stories and circumstances for why they are there.
Cat, a quiet and timid 50 year old woman is battling her family in court after being raped by her nephew. Sasha, a loud and brash 23 year old with four kids, is a victim of systematic and physical violence, and is battling to get custody of her four kids. Teresa, a 55 year old woman, has endured physical and psychological violence from her husband, who is an upstanding and well respected citizen in his community.
Not in our Neighbourhood was awarded Best new New Zealand Play at the 2015 Wellington Theatre Awards and Kali Kopae won the award for Best Actress for her outstanding performance in the show.
Writer and Director Jamie McCaskill is an award-winning playwright and was the recipient of the prestigious Bruce Mason Award in 2013. During the creation of the show, Jamie and Kali both worked at the Hauraki Women's Refuge for a year in an effort to create an authentic and real piece of theatre that speaks to all walks of life.
The Moa Show by Craig Geenty & Jamie McCaskill
Three lonely men are magically transported to a mythical land through the charms of a Maori busker. To get home they must seek the wisdom of the all-seeing Moa and escape the grips of a racist spotted Kiwi and a frustrated thrush.
This hilarious one-man show performed by Jamie McCaskill has had seasons in Wellington and Auckland, where Jamie was nominated for Best Newcomer, NZ Comedy Festival 2016.
Many successful New Zealand acts have launched their careers off the back of the Festival. We are very excited to make the most of the opportunity given to us, and to be able to share these works on the world's stage at the largest arts festival in the world!
