This Ends with Us
Charlotte Green & Diya Beharie | Film
Overview
As third-year film students from AUT, Diya Beharie (writer and director) and Charlotte Green (producer) are working together to showcase a film that captures both the toxicity and beauty of South Asian culture. This film is inspired by personal experiences and real-life stories commonly known within the South Asian community. They are both Bachelor of Communication students, in their final year majoring in Screen Production and are emerging as passionate filmmakers.
About This Ends with Us:
Myra (21) is a South Asian woman of Hindu descent. She is a passionate dancer but is suppressed by her family, who set unhealthy expectations aimed towards her becoming a lawyer. However, as a new law dropout, Myra secretly pursues her passion for dance professionally without anyone knowing. Eventually, her lies catch up to her and she is placed at a crossroad. Myra makes a life altering decision and feels responsible towards her caring younger brother Aashil (16). There is a choice between standing up for herself or continuing to fulfil her parents’ dreams. Through the lens of the South Asian community, we watch her navigate the journey of self-discovery, dealing with misogynistic views and the act of breaking free from intergenerational trauma.
Our Promise:
Our promise is to achieve a vision that is not seen enough; one that is far from the stereotypes that confine South Asians into a box. The West, the media and the film industry’s exposure to South Asian family dynamics is primarily in the form of humour. We promise to break the cycle and show the reality of intergenerational trauma. We showcase a variety of South Asian cultures, by creating the world of the film to be an exploration of different South Asian styles of dance which they learn within their dance degree.
Our goal:
Our goal is to raise awareness of the impact of intergenerational trauma and toxic family dynamics through a South Asian lens. Whether your experience or story is on a lower or more extreme scale, it is valid. This is the thought process we have had whilst creating This Ends with Us, as we want to impact the youth of the South Asian community. Many of the themes we tap into, in our film can be applied to non-South Asians. We want to take the film further to film festivals, screenings, events, and panel discussions to raise awareness.
Our team:
Our cast consists of both emerging and experienced South Asian creatives within the industry. Our crew consists of a diverse range of dedicated AUT students, both South Asian and non-South Asian, who we believe can help bring our vision to light. Our mentors are South Asian as they provide us with industry level guidance. There are several South Asian artists and small businesses that we are currently working towards partnering with for the film.
