The S Word

We are making a short film titled 'The S Word' and the topic that we're addressing is suicide. We want to talk about suicide from the perspective of the affected family after they've lost a loved one. It's a different take, because the majority of content around suicide tends to focus on the person who is suicidal.

Your help is needed

We lost 685 people last year (2019) alone to suicide. That's 685 families directly affected.

It's important that we raise the funds to create 'The S Word', because this is a topic that will constantly need to be highlighted, until we can put solutions in place that help our people overcome the though that suicide is a viable option.

You can help us by donating to this project with a lot or a little. All we ask is that you help us raise the $3,000 needed to unlock the $3000 Boosted X Moana match fund. If we raise at least that amount, then we can cover the overhead costs for any film equipment hireage, we can pay our cast and crew, cover food, petrol and any other costs incurred.

This Project 

'The S Word' is a short film about a family coping with the suicide of a family member. For Maria, the experience brings up past trauma. For Sonny, it means dealing with his emotional limitations. For Taga, it means re-evaluating his place in his world.

How do they fill the void? How will they learn to cope? How will they ask for help?

We want to create a piece of work that will snap the audience out of their comfort zone and put them firmly into a world of grief and loss and learning. It would be remiss to do it any other way, out of respect for those we have lost to suicide. We feel it's necessary that, although it's set in a Samoan/Māori context, that the language is universal, because we want this film to resonate with all people.

After all, suicide affects all of us.
