Overview
the rena, the reef, and the residents
When the Rena grounded on Otaiiti (Astrolabe reef) in October 2011 it wasn’t just the iconic New Zealand coastline that was threatened by the ensuing black waves of oil and debris, but also local wildlife, and a lifestyle treasured by its residents.
We are asking you to support this crowdfunding campaign to help us make an important feature length documentary film that highlights the groundbreaking difference that everyday people made to Aotearoa's largest environmental disaster.
This is a story about community by the community for the community. There are many sides to every story, and ten years on the Bay of Plenty locals each have their own stories to tell. The heart of this documentary will be the recollections of these characters, the effects it had on them both then, and ongoing until the present day.
We have already interviewed 30 people (Iwi, volunteers, community leaders etc) and assembled the first draft edit of the film, and this funding will help with further interviews and editing costs. Executive producers Claire and Brian Rogers have joined forces with producer Rosalie Liddle Crawford and director Anton Steel to realise this documentary with 25% of the film’s net profits pledged to support the community groups that grew from the disaster.
This is an opportunity to have your name included in the film credits by simply donating, or through match funding. We are inviting everyone to help us celebrate the power of common unity in pursuit of a shared goal.

Project Updates
The iwi response
Check out our latest teaser #5 – the iwi response.
Released each week during our crowdfunding campaign, each of the five teasers showcase a different aspect of the heart of the documentary we are making, titled ‘The Rena, the reef and the residents’.
The iwi response highlights the way that local iwi immediately dealt with the aftermath of the Rena grounding onto Otaiti - Astrolabe Reef which is located approximately 7km north of Motiti Island and 25km northeast of the entrance to Tauranga harbour in the Bay of Plenty.
Ultimately, Bay of Plenty iwi want the wrecked container ship Rena be removed from the reef, and for the moana restored to its pre-Rena state.
