The Project

Produced by The Oryza Foundation for Asian Performing Arts and Betsy & Mana Productions Ltd.

Written by Mei-Lin Te Puea Hansen.

Directed by Katie Wolfe.

Design team: John Verryt, Elizabeth Whiting, Paul Lim, Drew McMillan.

Nearly ninety years ago on a New Zealand market garden, two families, one M?ori and the other Chinese, became part of a romance that would uproot their lives over generations.

Layered with myth and fable, The Mooncake and the K?mara is a moving story about a mixed-up, M?ori-Chinese love affair that sprouts among rows of potatoes. Told in a rich mixture of English, M?ori and Cantonese, The Mooncake and the K?mara is the debut, award-winning play by M?ori-Chinese playwright Mei-Lin Te Puea Hansen.

Loosely based on the story of her grandparents' relationship, this is a story about history, duty, secrets and the delicate balance needed to grow families.

In 2017 we are bringing this sellout hit back to Auckland's Q Theatre  (June 28 - July 8) for a return season and Wellington's Hannah Playhouse  (June 21 - 24)  for the first time as part of the Kia Mau Festival.

To pull this off we need your support, to pay our incredible cast and crew and for the cost of touring.
