Embark on a musical journey with us as we seek to elevate our skills in mastering the art of Tahitian music and singing!
From July 22nd to November 28th, 2024, we will immerse ourselves in the creative process of crafting unique drumbeats and songs that reflect the rich cultural heritage of Tahiti. Our ultimate goal is to showcase our musical creations to the community, spreading joy and cultural appreciation through our performance.
Name Meaning
- Enjoy the Journey.
- Remain steadfast despite difficulties.
- With faith and courage, all will be well.
- Work hard.
- Unite as a collective, not just as drummers, but as the instruments merge into one.
- A = Ahuuranui, ROHI = from ROHI PEHE meaning Drummers, => Ahuuranui Rohi Pehe = Ahuuranui’s Drummers.
Name inspiration
Director Ahuuranui, a devout Christian, sought divine guidance through prayer to find a meaningful name for her drumming group that encapsulates their essence. After reflecting on their journey since their inception in January 2023, a word resonated with her - "Arohi". This name was inspired by a hymn titled "Haere mai, e te feia mo’a", sung by her mother during her childhood at church. The hymn, rooted in the faith, perseverance, and hope of the early Latter-day Saints during their arduous trek to the Salt Lake Valley in the 19th century, conveys a message of trust in God, finding joy in the journey, and unwavering belief in the face of adversity. It symbolizes the notion that with faith and courage, challenges can be overcome, offering solace and motivation to those navigating hardships.
Relevance
The majority of our original drummers had no prior experience with Tahitian drumming until January 2023. Our group consists of individuals from diverse backgrounds who share a deep passion and dedication to mastering their Tahitian drumming and music skills. Despite making mistakes along the way, they support each other in their journey to improve, harmonize, and achieve unity in their sound.
Our beginning
Our journey started at the Ori Tahiti with Ahuuranui Family Showcase in 2020, where a group of husbands and partners had a conversation about drumming together in the near future. In December 2022, the Air Tahiti Nui General Manager reached out to the School Director for an Authentic Tahiti Performance featuring Live Drumming set for March 2023. In early January 2023, we commenced rehearsals with close friends and partners, including Latu, Antony, Ofisa, Landry, Teare, Vaihiria, and Ahu, exchanging knowledge and supporting each other's development. We have since welcomed additional core drummers Ariitea, Tunui, Amo, Henry, and Chris into our group.
In result
The name AROHI embodies the principles of finding joy in the journey, remaining steadfast despite difficulties, and believing that with faith and courage, all will be well. It also signifies the importance of hard work and unity, not only as individual drummers but as a collective where each member becomes an integral part of a harmonious whole. The inspiration behind the name comes from the hymn "Come, Come, Ye Saints," which symbolizes faith, perseverance, and hope in the face of challenges. The relevance of the name to our group lies in the fact that most of our founding drummers had no prior experience with Tahitian drums before January 2023. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they share a passion for learning and improving their drumming skills, supporting each other through mistakes and challenges to become a cohesive and skilled team.
