Subtle Dances

The BalletCollective Aotearoa is excited to present the inaugural season of three new homegrown, contemporary ballets, created by three of New Zealand's leading contemporary ballet choreographers - Cameron McMillan, Loughlan Prior and Sarah Knox.

After a difficult year working and developing these works in between lock-downs and imposed alert levels, we are looking for your support to now dress these works and produce them for the stage.

WHO we are

The BalletCollective Aotearoa is a diverse group of individuals, passionate about dance in New Zealand. This collective provides a platform for kiwis to create and express themselves through movement based on the ballet aesthetic.

We aim to articulate our unique voice through the energy and magnetism that our nationally trained dancers expel. Our dynamic style places us here in this young, rugged, diverse landscape and intrinsically relates and connects all New Zealanders.

WHAT we are creating

The BalletCollective is thrilled to showcase their movement in these three new, big works by securing some of New Zealand’s leading dancers including Abigail Boyle, William Fitzgerald and Medhi Angot, working alongside exciting up-and-coming talent Tabitha Dombroski, Kit Reilly, Bjorn Aslund, Honor Christian-Slane and Callum Phipps, at the same time mentoring interns from The New Zealand School of Dance.

This show will be accompanied with a line up of all New Zealand music by Rhian Sheehan, John Psathas and Claire Cowan, which will be played live and performed by the brilliant NZTrio.  

WHY you are needed

After a year of disruptions due to lockdowns and changing alert levels, we are now looking to finally finish the creation of the works and dress our dancers in bespoke costumes by Dunedin designer Katie Day and the collective's very own William Fitzgerald. We will illuminate these with lighting and production by Alan Wilson and his team at Eventsuite.

We need your support to raise enough money to cover the design and build of the costumes with the creation of lighting design that will enhance the incredible choreography created over this extraordinary year. Funds will also go towards the arrangement and recording of the show's live music.

We are so excited to bring homegrown contemporary ballet to audiences around New Zealand, finding new ways to explore our uniqueness and how we fit within our everchanging landscape.
