Overview
WHAT IS SO'OTAGA?
So’otaga is translated as ‘coming together’ or a ‘gathering to share ideas’.
The intension of So’otaga was and still is, to bring together Samoan students or students that have an interest in learning the fa’a Samoa (Samoan way) and coming together to celebrate academic excellence, embrace their culture and to create networks.
This annual conference celebrates the increased number of Samoan students that are studying in the different Tertiary institutions around New Zealand. So’otaga is more than a cultural competition as it allows tertiary students to value their academic journeys amongst other fellow Samoan students by sharing creative ideas, building long-life relationships and improving academic excellence by inspiring each other with their experiences.
WHY SHOULD YOU SUPPORT?
By supporting a project that promotes learning, expression, and embracing of the Samoan culture is important for several reasons: Samoan culture is rich in traditions, language, arts, and customs that have been passed down through generations. Supporting such a project helps preserve this cultural heritage for future generations.
For Samoan students and peers, having opportunities to learn about and engage with their own culture fosters a sense of identity and belonging. It strengthens their connection to their roots and community and for non-Samoans to grasp knowledge about Samoan culture. This project focuses on Samoan culture to provide educational opportunities not only for Samoan individuals but also for others who may not be familiar with the culture. This promotes cross-cultural understanding and appreciation.
Embracing and celebrating Samoan culture contributes to the diversity of perspectives and experiences within educational settings and communities. It enriches the overall cultural tapestry. Investing in cultural education and expression ensures that Samoan traditions and values continue to thrive in an ever-changing world. It helps safeguard cultural practices from being lost over time.
Our So'otaga project contributes to a more inclusive and enriched society where diverse cultures are valued and celebrated.
All donations and contributions are gratefully appreciated, in order for us to reach our goal and put into action our love, knowledge and values of the Samoan culture.
