SHE'S CROWNING: MELBOURNE THIS WAY
Murdoch Keane | Theatre
Overview
"The Crown, but on poppers" – Nathan Joe
After smash seasons and sell-out shows around Aotearoa in 2022, we would love to take our satire spectacular SHE'S CROWNING to the Melbourne Fringe Festival in October 2023
– 8 weeks away!
SHE’S CROWNING an anarchic queer take on royalmania. This year it had sold-out seasons at Q Theatre during the Auckland Pride Festival and Bats in Wellington in the NZ Fringe Festival. And now with our confirmed season and a spectacular venue in the Melbourne Fringe Festival – all we need is a $5500 Boost to make it happen
The show features all the familiar faces, from Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Phillip and the iconic Diana, Princess of Wales to hitherto unknown characters like Charles’ homophobic therapist, Margaret Thatcher’s henchmen and the favourite horse of Camilla Parker Bowles. it's "Go for broke, unrelenting, not for the faint of heart"
The $5500 we are seeking will go directly towards flights and accommodation in Melbourne for our small team of two performers and support crew during our season. We are a young company dedicated to making original work, and we are excited to have been offered this opportunity – Melbourne Fringe Festival is a magnet for independent theatre makers and has spring-boarded artists into international careers. We couldn’t hope for a better trans-Tasman debut than this.
As makers we are inspired by the legacy of outstanding queer work in Aotearoa. Peter Wells and Stewart Main’s cinema epic ‘Desperate Remedies’ and the cabaret shows of trans pioneer Carmen Rupe are touchpoints for us - they show a fearlessness that has inspired our work. These are the shoulders we would be standing on in Melbourne, and we acknowledge them with pride.
In a time where hysteria is being spread around queer identities it is important to make work that speaks in our own original voice – bold, invigorating and joyful.
Taking SHE’S CROWNING to the Melbourne Fringe will be one small step for a Queen...
one giant leap for queen-kind. We hope you will take it with us.
xx

WE DID IT JOE!!!
We have been absolutely blown away by the support for this campaign. To send two young divas across the sea and perform our very own show. Melbourne Fringe is less than a couple of weeks away, and we will not let you down!
I feel unbelievably proud of this show. It is perhaps an unlikely candidate to receive the wealth of support and performance opportunities it has had. It doesn’t deal with trauma, or climate change, it’s not trying to patch any fiscal hole or get to the bottom of what it means to live in a queer body. It has never purported itself to be anything other than exactly what it is - a great time.
I have loved sweatily emerging from the dressing room afterwards and seeing the smiles on the faces of my mates, But far more the very enthusiastic feedback of total strangers. Who saw the show on a whim, or a rec, or completely by chance. I’m so glad to have given you guys a great night out and to have had you laughing in a room with a hundred or so other strangers. Mission accomplished.
It cannot be understated enough how much work has gone into this silliness. Every single thing you’ve seen, from the promo images, to the jokes, to the wigs, to the tinsel curtains, to the horse cock which fires real fake cum - it has all been engineered, created and championed by Peter and I.
This is mainly because we can never afford to have anyone else do it, but also it is because we love it! In every part of She’s Crowning is a piece of us.
But we have not been alone, and this is especially true as of now. With so many of you having helped us reach this momentous goal. From our patrons, to our audience, to our team, to our reviewers, to our programmers, to all our friends, allies & foes.
3 years ago this show was something we joked about on a couch over a bottle of wine - I particularly remember the night prince Phillip died while we were watching Let's Play Grand Theft Auto 5 With Coco Peru as a touchstone of actually committing to putting something up on stage.
Now what once lived in our heads now lives in suitcases ready to take over the world.
(This time the royals venturing overseas will hopefully have very different global implications)
Thank you all so much for believing in us, and this kaupapa, and perhaps most importantly the potential we have for permeating the world of theatre here in Aotearoa. We are going away, but we are also coming back! And this future is something we care about deeply and hope to contribute to generously in the years ahead.
So I’m popping a proverbial confetti canon and showering you all goldenly for all that you have done. This show has become a big part of my world, so your support in kind - means the same thing xx
Love you deep,
She’s Crowning HQ
