The Project

Normal Company presents 'Scrubbing Day', a comedy/horror short film produced by emerging female filmmakers in Wellington.

JOIN US IN GETTING THIS FILM ACROSS THE LINE AND INTO New Zealand FILM FESTIVALS.

It's Scrubbing Day, and innocent siblings Fanny and Brian dawdle during their weekly bath together as they await their unholiest of chores: sponge-bathing the festering monster who lives up the stairs. Reveling in the discomfort of its audience, Scrubbing Day takes 'family obligation' to a surreal extreme.

Scrubbing Day is a highly stylised film, with the grittiness of Gummo, the artful disarray of Jean-Pierre Juenet (dir. Amelie), the dark themes of Dogtooth, and the off-beat humour of Terry Gilliam - and featuring impeccable performances by Ben Fransham (Petyr, What We Do in the Shadows), Finn McCauley (Roger, 'Lord of the Flies'), and charismatic newcomer Kimre Viviers.

Our kaupapa is about mentoring and supporting women in film to make uncompromisingly original content.

Scrubbing Day is crewed almost entirely by emerging female filmmakers. Our aim is to create a space where crew members with more experience can offer practical advice and guidance to women who are just starting out in a famously challenging industry.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Creator Pachali Brewster has been making wonderfully strange theatre shows and shorts for years. Scrubbing Day is her biggest project to date. Scrubbing Day was developed as a proof-of-concept for a feature film (currently in development) and has been supported through several industry-run workshops including the EAT Short Film Workshop, WIFT's Emerging Producers Intensive Workshop, and the prestigious Show Me Shorts' Aotearoa Short Film Lab.

Pachali is passionate about fostering equal opportunities within the film industry. Together with producer Lucy Holyoake, she runs a community for emerging female filmmakers (the Emerging Women Filmmakers Network - Wellington), out of which formed the bulk of the crew for Scrubbing Day. Our goal is to take Scrubbing Day to New Zealand film festivals, and for it to serve as a calling card for all involved and a stepping stone in our careers.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

We've successfully shot the film and it looks B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L. Our hard-working team have proved that we have the tenacity and skill to produce a professional and New Zealandly-competitive short film (and on a relatively small budget, too!).

Now we need a final push to get this film through post-production and out into the world.

We are incredibly grateful to the Emerging Artists Trust for match-donoring $1,000 to get us started. Short filmmaking can be expensive, and we are relying on our community to help us get this film made to the standard it deserves.

PLEASE HELP SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY

Anything you can contribute - big or small - would be an incredible help to us.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR SUPPORTING US!

Much love,

The Scrubbing Day Team xox
