Returning To The Roots
Tamari’i Mā’ohi | Multi Discipline
The Project
FUNDING CAMPAIGN
Our funding campaign aims to support six children as they enhance their skills in Tahitian drumming and dancing. Their primary objective is to present their musical creations to the community, promoting cultural appreciation through their performances and potentially achieving success in upcoming competitions.
CREATION PROCESS
From October 1st to December 19th, 2024, they will be fully engaged in the creative process of developing unique drumbeats that reflect the cultural heritage of Tahiti and its islands.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE NAME
The name "Tamari'i" translates to "child," which also pays homage to the tradition of naming competing groups in the renowned Tahitian competition, Heiva I Tahiti. "Mā'ohi" encompasses all the islands of French Polynesia, which also stems from the diverse ancestral backgrounds of the children, who hail from multiple islands in French Polynesia.
INITIAL JOURNEY
One of our young children expressed interest in competing in a school showcase, prompting discussions with family members knowledgeable in Tahitian dance and drumming. With guidance from an aunt who leads a Tahitian dance school in Auckland and an uncle who is a member of the winning drumming group from Heiva I Tahiti 2023, the group began practicing for competitions.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Following their victory at the Lalaga - Te Iti Kahurangi All Out Showcase on September 6th, 2024, the group is now motivated to further explore their ancestral heritage and participate in additional events.
WHERE WILL YOUR MONEY GO
Your generous contribution will be instrumental in turning this vision into a reality and will directly empower the children to craft a memorable and impactful experience for our community.
