PleasureDora - short film

Are you questioning where AI & machine-learning is taking humanity and our need for meaningful connection?

Are you intrigued by how robots will look and behave when they’re a few upgrades away from taking over the world?

Well, we have a film just for you!

PleasureDora is a quirky eight-minute sci-fi film.

We need ((your 😉)) help to complete post-production. 

PleasureDora is about a glitchy sex-bot at the end of her shelf life, and Colin, her lonely final customer. Together they confront mortality, second chances, and what life on the scrap heap means for them. 

Some ideas we wanted to explore with this film...

While humans are creating more and more awe-inspiring tools of communication, are we losing our ability to connect with each other?

On screen we want to see more older female characters who are strong, ambitious, body confident and have some flesh on them. 

The aching desire we all have to reach full potential, and whether we give up in the face of obsolescence.

What we've already achieved...

PleasureDora was written by us, Mark & Marion Prebble, and we produced it with Rina Patel. PleasureDora is played by Marion and co-stars Edwin Wright.

Last year we self-funded the shoot, pulled together an awesome crew, cast, and sponsorship partners, and rung in some big childcare favours to get it in the can. 

Panavision supported us with an incredible camera and lenses, enabling cinematographer Kelly Chen to further showcase her incredible talent.

We’ve just finished editing and are ready to dive into the final phase of post-production to help make the film look and sound as cinematic as possible, before submitting it to festivals.

And this is where our ASK of YOU comes in….

Grading, visual effects, sound design and music are complex creative processes. With your backing this will make our film come together seamlessly, giving us the best chance of being selected for a top-tier genre festival, so that the rest of

the world may see this work. Two of New Zealand’s top post-production houses are sponsoring PleasureDora by offering their craft and expertise at heavily discounted rates.

Colourist Alana Cotton will grade PleasureDora at Images and Sound, who are also handling VFX. 

Vedat Kiyiki will mix and design the sound at Envy Studios.

We were lucky enough to work with both of them on our previous film Baby? (which you can watch here).

We are trying to raise $10,000 to cover these costs alongside the creation of an original music score, a detailed festival strategy from international experts Festival Formula, and a few festival submission fees.

We’re so excited for the world to see our strange quirky neon film, and we’re so close.

Who we are...

Marion Prebble is a Tāmaki Makarau–based actor, writer and producer. She has worked both in Aotearoa and the United Kingdom since graduating from Unitec with a Bachelor of Performing Arts degree. Highlights have included performing in award-winning short films Datsun and Baby?, Producer roles at The Basement Theatre and Massive Company, and writing, producing and performing in The Panty Shelf in Edinburgh, London, and Tāmaki Makarau.

Mark Prebble is a director and writer of film and theatre. His work has screened or been performed around the world winning multiple awards. Mark is also the Festival Manager at Show Me Shorts Film Festival, where he has helped connect Kiwi short films with audiences, in New Zealand and internationally, for the last ten years.

Rina Patel is a producer, writer, director, actor and production manager working in both film and theatre.  She is a Te Kura o Aotearoa Toi Whakaari actor graduate and an Auckland University MA screenwriting/directing alum. She spent several years working with refugee youth as a production manager for Mixit empowering rangatahi through creativity. She is the Series Producer for Someday Stories
