Overview
WE NEED SUPPORT
We’ve been holding exhibitions and events from emerging artists since 2016, and have big plans for more in 2023 and beyond– but maintaining an artist-run space comes with a long list of maintenance costs and bills. Funding uncertainty for the creative arts left us short of the essential running costs that keep our doors open. We now need help from the community.
Rent and bills are the main costs we need to cover, we also need to paint our walls, replace gallery lights that have blown, maintain our website and pay our insurance premiums.
We believe that providing spaces like play_station is invaluable for the creative community in Te Whanganui-a-Tara and also wider Aotearoa. This can't happen without our most mundane costs being covered. Donating to our boosted campaign means that we can continue giving artists our full support.
ABOUT PLAY_STATION
We provide a supportive and professional environment, giving artists the freedom to explore and experiment with their practice. We value the work of emerging artists, and being able to provide a space where the art community can gather and engage with quality art.
play_station is not for profit, which means that we can provide a space for artists to make and exhibit work without the pressures and obligations associated with commercial galleries. Artists don’t have to pay to exhibit at play_station; we’re dedicated to providing opportunities whilst being financially supportive and accessible.
We open our call for proposals twice a year, with exhibitions selected by our facilitators and a panel of invited artists. Throughout our programming, we also show a variety of events and performances.
OUR TEAM
Our team is Loretta Riach, Angel C. Fitzgerald, Yumoi Zheng, Fred Small and Max Fleury. We are a group of practising artists based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, who bring a wealth of experience exhibiting and working in the industry. We have a dedicated group of volunteers who host our exhibitions and keep the gallery open. We also work with designers and photographers to promote and document exhibitions.
