Overview
Our short documentary explores the cultural tension within an individual who is multi-cultural. We discuss our subject's experiences of growing up as a person who is half Samoan and half Tongan in New Zealand. Our film revolves around the themes of cultural identity fracture, sense of belonging and acceptance. We do this through spoken word, cultural performances, songs, and authentic interviews. Our hope for this film is that we will be able to help multi-ethnic people understand that they are not alone in their feelings of cultural inadequacy and also to spread awareness of these cultural issues.
Our film:
Michelle Brunt-Tiueti comes from an ethnically diverse background. Her mother is Samoan and her father Tongan. Throughout her life she has had difficulty finding her place in both Samoan and Tongan society, often being outcasted in both cultures and being called "plastic”. For most half-cast individuals, having more than one cultural heritage can be difficult and confusing.
Our Drive:
As students in our final year at Auckland University of Technology entering the film business, we want to address niche and important issues that affect everyday individuals and spread awareness. We want to bring shed light on the idea of being multicultural in New Zealand and how identity can have a large impact on mental health and development.
Our promise:
-
- We promise to remain ethical and unbiased throughout this process
- We promise to stay true to our interviewees and keep their stories 100% authentic
- Be respectful with the topic of culture
- Create the best film to our ability
- Consult our interviewees before our final product
