NZCBA Festival 2019
Wellington Symphonic Bands Inc. | Music
Overview
In August, Wellington Symphonic Bands - Wellington City Concert Band and the Capital City Wind Band - will be performing in the NZ Concert Band Festival in Epsom, Auckland, competing against other bands from around NZ and taking part in workshops.
This BOOSTED Campaign is to raise money to help members of the band who are unable to afford the cost of taking part in the Festival. This includes airfares to Auckland, transport to/from airport to Epsom, the transportation of instruments, and accommodation in Auckland.
The festival is an important part of our annual programme as it offers a great opportunity for members to improve their musicianship whilst promoting better cohesion throughout the organisation.
Your generous support of this BOOSTED campaign is hugely appreciated as it helps us to enrich people's lives through the magic of music.
About the Wellington Symphonic Bands Inc (WSBi).
The Wellington Symphonic Bands Incorporated (formerly WCCB) was established in 2010 and currently consists of two community bands. It is the only community wind ensemble of its size in the greater Wellington district, involving amateur players from the city, the Hutt Valley and the wider area.
The bands are:
Wellington City Concert Band (WCCB), with Musical Director Dr Keith Moss, consists of experienced players of roughly Grade 7 and higher.
Capital City Wind Band (CCWB), with Musical Director Mike Ashton consists of players generally grade 3-6 who are starting out on, or returning to, their instrument and those who enjoy lighter repertoire.
Our bands play a range of music including classical transcriptions, marches, jazz, swing, and modern symphonic band and concert music.
The bands now have a strong core of around 90 players all up with new members being attracted in good numbers, many are young adults with numerous secondary school students joining. Currently Capital City Wind Band is around 35 strong with ages ranging from 10 to 70+ years of age. WSBi raises funds to assist disadvantaged young people to meet their annual subscriptions as the involvement and development of young people and the active inclusion of people with disabilities are important elements of the band's culture.
For the first time in 2017, both bands performed at the New Zealand Concert Band Festival in Whangarei. In 2018, in conjunction with NZ Concert Band Association we hosted and performed at the Festival at Victoria University in Wellington. We participate regularly at many other annual regional musical events such as CubaDupa, WeBO in addition to multiple community concerts each year.
We are actively engaged with other bands and orchestras in the Wellington region. In recent years we have performed with the Hutt Valley Orchestra, Wellington Male Voice Choir and in June 2019 Capital City Wind Band performed with the Hutt Valley Community Choir in "The Sound of Musicals."
