The Project

Nocturnal Projections and Other Small Happenings (July 17th - 31st 2019) is a group exhibition of renowned sound and light artists  from around NZ.

Kia ora, Maloelelei, Bula Vinaka,

Art and music are the backbone of culture. Without these integral cultural reflections and unifiers, there is no culture. Nocturnal Projections and Other Small Happenings intends to enhance the thriving arts and music culture of Dunedin, by creating a humble sound and light group exhibition, using artists from all over New Zealand (including Dunedin). In order to ensure maximum benefit to the general public of this fine city and with the support of many people and organisations, we will be exhibiting in multiple public spaces around Dunedin city. By utilising these spaces we will create many beneficial outcomes for artists, the organisations involved and importantly the general public. These benefits include dispelling some of the mystery around contemporary art by bringing it out from behind the gallery walls and into the public domain, it also intends to encourage people to visit galleries.

This is a Non Profit Exhibition.

This is the second Nocturnal Projections and Other Small Happenings exhibition. Nocturnal Projections and Other Small Happenings is being set up as a biennial art exhibition for Dunedin city.

We are not a spectacle. We are a series of small interruptions in the wintry Dark Sky landscapes of Dunedin City. These small interruptions will be highlighted by a series of discussions, performances, interviews and other small events. This years artists involved are: Stuart Griffith, Leben Young, Paul Bradley, Dr Jeremy Mayall, Dr Layne Waerea, Luke McConnell, Matt Sephton, Ivan Mrsic, and last but certainly not least Peter Jefferies.

We are extremely excited to have such amazing artists and of course to have Peter Jefferies from the formative New Plymouth band Nocturnal Projections (1981-1983).

We are exhibiting in four very public spaces around Dunedin City which include the Rear Window of the Dunedin Public Art Gallery; the Ground Floor of  the Dunedin Public Library; the First Church; the Gasworks Museum and Olga Gallery.

This exhibition will be highlighted by a series of small happenings: these are two Panel Discussions, two Openings (which will include performances and bands), a night of light and sound performances, and interviews with the artists by 91FM and Otago Access Radio.

In order to pay for this exhibition, we need your support.

We would be extremely grateful for any donations and that you share this project with your friends , whanau or colleagues.

Thank you!
