Takat?pui in modern terms are tangata whenua of Aotearoa who identify as LGBTQI+

This documentary film will explore the intersecting themes of gender, cultural identity, social issues like stigmas and discrimination, and how to navigate multiple worlds: the dominant p?keha postcolonial, the traditional te ao M?ori, and the Takat?pui, to weave together a portrait of what it means to be Takat?pui in Aotearoa in 2017.

As Takat?pui myself I feel there isn't enough positive representation of not only Takat?pui but m?ori people in the media. We are often seen as 'other' and dehumanised, but this film is all about shining a light on and the celebration of Takat?pui.

The key filmmakers are:

Piripi Mackie (Ng?ti Kahungunu, Ng? Rauru, Ng?i Tahu,Ng?ti Tuwharetoa) a queer non-binary artist.

Piripi has studied Fine Arts at both Auckland University of Technology and Whitecliffe College. Piripi is currently co-curating Performance Art Week Aotearoa 2017, and work to-date includes:
