Overview

SYNOPSIS

Ollie is the keeper of a lighthouse, Enzo keeps forgetting to replace its light, Margot prefers to keep their island in the dark. Dolores has run away from the circus and has a package to deliver… A surreal parable of solitude and sorrow, Mr Melancholy examines the relationship between grief and loneliness, exploring why sometimes, isolation feels safer than human connection, and how the magnitude of the past can overwhelm or illuminate the hope of a future.

WHY SUPPORT OUR TEAM?

From the Director:

Mr. Melancholy is a timeless play which explores themes that have become all the more pertinent under the spotlight of the current times we find ourselves in. Loneliness, solitude and existentialism have taken on new forms as we navigate this shifting world. As artists, we’re drawn to making art that reflects this new context, offering a space for solace and reflection, and a great laugh.

Stylistically, Mr. Melancholy takes an oblique approach, often wrapping deeper messages up in absurd symbols, allowing the audience the opportunity to dig as deeply as they want to go.

We’re running a Boosted campaign to support the creative team in producing the NZ debut of Mr. Melancholy at Studio One Toi Tū, Auckland Fringe 2021. All funds raised will go towards supporting the exciting team of creatives who are contributing their time to the project.

We believe in times like these it’s more important than ever to keep making art and would love your support in helping us do that.
