The Project

This 1950's inspired weird-horror explores a yearning mother's relationship with her estranged son who has become distant after creating an inseparable bond with his pet duckling. - which is based on a TRUE STORY! (Kind of).

1950's inspired did we say? Think films like La La Land, which is set in the modern day but visually, it takes you back to the days of the Atomic Age and "Singing in the Rain" with Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds! We chose this aesthetic to enhance the way we exaggerate the uniqueness and surrealism of this production - to stand out from the crowd and challenge ourselves without having to blow the budget!

The Team

Georgie Lush and PK Hammond are two of the most prolific figures behind One Dollar Genre, an independent filmmaking crew based in Christchurch who make one short film a month. They specialize in producing and directing and their style of leadership and a vast array of connections in theatre have done so much for their careers in filmmaking. Now, they have boarded ship and took on the challenge to produce this exciting short film which is a fresh new take on what they are usually used to.

Filmmaking is a collaborative art that takes a team to reach the same goal, to use each person's expertise to elevate the storytelling and overall value of the production. We believe in sourcing young local filmmakers for our projects which has been done before in our previous short film "What We Leave Behind" which was previously a successful Boosted campaign project and it managed to take home "Best Thriller" at Alternative Film Festival in Toronto!

The Funding

We are here for your support for the arts! If we were to be successful, it will cover some of the essential costs of the production including;

Cast and Crew: We are 100% committed that our cast and crew gets something out of this production to bring you a polished film!

Catering: We aim to bring a good variety of food to ensure that our cast and crew are well-fed and hydrated to keep them energized and give it their all!

Locations & Art Department: As a team, we have multiple goals to make this film stand out from the rest and one of them is visually making it stand out with grand locations and incredible art department!

You can donate any amount, your kindness and generosity will help us tremendously! In addition, by donating $30 or more, you’ll be offered a key supporters credit at the end of our screen to show our appreciation!

The Details

This film is fun, bubbly and full of joy until it isn't. It's a relationship battle between a yearning failing mother and a pet duckling who's gotten all the attention of the son, Arlo.

As a storyteller, you always have to have a message in your story and to us, this film is to realize that children may remember certain events differently compared to an adult and how this could affect them growing up. In this case, it's all about a child choosing sides where they feel most comfortable and happy and how either side can react to it differently. This is horrifying but to combine that with horror elements and body-horror is what's taking this to the next level.

The Impact

The story comes from the heart and real life experiences but it's all exaggerated to the point that it's unique and fresh to the eyes of New Zealand independent filmmaking. Another element is the fact that the film doesn't need dialogue and that it's more impactful if the audience experiences what is going on in front of them. Think of the 2009 animated movie "Up" where we get to witness Carl and Ellie's life together without having to hear them - it's all emotion. To us, these are what's exciting about "Mother Duck".
