Milk of Dreams
Sarah Grohnert | Film
Overview
“Milk of Dreams” is a highly cinematic short film about the timeless bond between a mother and daughter. Set in and around the wildly beautiful landscape of an old New Zealand farm cottage, the story unfolds in dreamlike sequences that are set to a haunting vocal score. As mother and daughter move through the changing seasons of their intimate relationship, the film engages the viewer’s subconscious to experience and interpret the daughter’s journey towards her new sense of self.
With pitch perfect performances and introducing a unique filmmaker’s vision to the world of cinema, “Milk of Dreams” is an outstanding project and has its eyes set on competing at the 2023 Venice Film Festival.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I absolutely love cinema. The experience of looking up at a big screen, in a dark room full of people equally captivated by what's unfolding in front of our eyes, is a new thrill every time.
My own cinema debut as a filmmaker was Ever the Land, an award-winning documentary that premiered to sold-out audiences at NZIFF 2015 and went on to screen at major international festivals across the world. I also edited Falling Up, Chelsie Preston-Crayford's short film that won Best Short at NZIFF 2018.
Milk of Dreams is my opportunity to demonstrate my ability to write and direct drama.
I made this film following my artistic instincts, resisting trends and commercial pressure in order to make something unique and original. My hopes for the film are to bring this cinematic experience to audiences across New Zealand and internationally, so that all the talent involved in the making of this film can be proud of what we made together and continue making films.
PROJECT HISTORY
The film is part of the New Zealand Film Commission “Fresh Shorts” funding programme which paid for production of the film. Production funding also came from the late Adrian Burr (Prospect/Group Films), an incredible supporter of the arts who fully believed in this film and its makers.
Film production took place in December 2022 and we have just finished editing the film.
Now we are now looking to add the all important finishing touches such as sound design, colour grading, music composition and sound mix.
WHAT WE'RE ASKING FOR
A successful crowdfunding campaign will help us pay for world-class New Zealand post-production services. We have some of the country's best postproduction talent lined up to complete Milk of Dreams with us. It really speaks to the quality of the film to have been able to secure their artistic commitment to this project.
It is vital that we can complete Milk of Dreams to the highest industry standards in order to compete in the world’s international A-List festivals. We are highly motivated and confident that this short film can pull some punches to represent New Zealand talent on big screens around the world and make a positive contribution to the future of cinema as a highly unique art form.
We hope you’ll join this already stellar line-up of supporters and help us finish Milk of Dreams by supporting this campaign. No amount is too small – or too large!
Thank you for your support.

Milk of Dreams - Update
Dear Supporters,
it's been nearly 2 years that we were able to finish "Milk of Dreams" with your help and financial support. For those of you that are following the film on our Instagram handle, you know that we finally cracked the festival circuit last year and enjoyed some beautiful screenings and successes in Colombia, Mexico and Italy. For those of you that keep a healthy distance to social media, here is a little insight into the journey:
It is a bit of a 'wild west' out there: These days, film festivals commonly get thousands of submissions when they can only programme a few dozen films.
With so many incredible films in the running, selection follows not only the quality of a film but also its suitability to themes and other curative elements that each festivals decides on individually. What you hope for as a filmmaker is that of the dozens of films the selectors view each day, your one stands out...and connects in particular with the person that has the last word on the final selection. Rejections are part and parcel of it all, the more special it feels when your film gets selected, based on its own merit.
I made this film more or less stubbornly dedicated to my firm belief that the work is always an act of collaboration with something unknown and bigger than yourself, and that the creative process is a fine calibration of my deeply personal vision with the inherent intelligence of the work itself. That's when something original and true happens and you get to marvel at a piece of work that feels both of you but also not from you.
I've had the chance to visit festivals in Colombia and Italy last year and engage with audiences and programmers. "Milk of Dreams" is hard to put into words and I am proud of that, otherwise...why make a film? I could just write what I have to say and save a lot of time and troubles. The film inspired beautiful meetings and conversations with people of all ages and walks of life. It allowed me to experience different cultures, world views and ways of perceiving life and our complex relationships with each other. I got to experience watching this film on the big screen together with my mum in Italy, which (given the nature of the film) was the most special experience, a kind of full circle.
I can share with you that of all the films I encountered out there, "Milk of Dreams" really is unique. And I am not saying that as a pat on my back, but as a testament to your support and belief in this project. Our world is changing so fast and the films and shows that we watch are in ever increasing ways influenced by technology and systems-thinking that cares less and less for its makers and their visions, but ever more for monetary value and success formulas to replicate.
Our varied ways of being and feeling are sold back to us in a homogenised soup of "content"...with little tolerance for ambiguity, nuances and a contemplative pace.
Making independent film has always been challenging and it's only getting more so. The film industry is going through a seismic change and films like "Milk of Dreams" will only become even rarer. But with your help, we made it and it will stand the test of time and always be a testament to something uniquely and fully human and I just wanted to give you all a big shout out. I still hope there'll be a NZ screening one day that I can share with you and invite you to. For now, it seems that the appetite and appreciation for this film lies overseas but I am hopeful that as all good things do, this one too will eventually return home. Warmest, Sarah
