Overview

Based on the true story of the German submarine U-862 that cruised the East Coast of New Zealand in January 1945, the film follows a grieving war-widow as she seeks revenge on two crewmen from the U-boat who come ashore for fresh milk.

THE PROJECT

Filming took place from 5 to 8 April 2018, at beautiful Whareakeake near Dunedin.

The script for 'Milk' was chosen by Short Film Otago for their 2016 funding round and was shortlisted for Fresh Shorts funding by the New Zealand Film Commission.

The project is also supported by the Queenstown Camera Company, Enterprise Dunedin and Film Otago Southland.

THE TEAM

Writer and director Pennie Hunt lived in Germany for many years where she truly got to know German culture. In collaboration with German-born producer and film tourism expert Stefan Roesch, Pennie has made two award-winning short films to date.

Our Director of Photography Kirk Pflaum has worked in film and television for over a decade. We have two experienced editors working on our film: Lyra Stewart and Richard Lord. Music composer Plan 9, sound designer Chris Sinclair, and special effects wizard Nuno Cortinhal have also committed to help us make this an outstanding film.

The lead role is played by Jodie Hillock who has starred in numerous NZ feature dramas and short films. German actors Mike Hoffmann and Peter Volksdorf travelled from Berlin to take on the roles of the two German crewmen. And finally, Dunedin's film and theatre veteran Peter Hayden also stars.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

We would be so grateful if you could help us to bring this story to life by making a donation to our crowdfunding campaign. Even if you can't donate, please spread the word!

We have been fortunate to receive $9,000 from Short Film Otago as well as an incredible amount of in-kind support for our project, but in order to finance the post production costs, we need to raise additional funds to pay for special effects, sound design, music, colour grading and marketing material.

THANK YOU

We appreciate even the smallest donation, and will acknowledge all donors in the end credits of the film.

NZ donors qualify for a 33% tax rebate.

FINALLY

Making a film involves the generous support of many people and we are very thankful to everyone who has helped us to get to where we are now with this film.

Our particular thanks go to Hirepool New Zealand, Elm Wildlife Tours, Rainbow Paints, Covermarq and Four Square Port Chalmers who have all provided in-kind sponsorship.

Thank you und vielen herzlichen Dank!

'Milk' is expected to hit the film festival circuit from February 2019.
