Masters of Craft Studies in Estonia
Sylvia Burgess | Craft and Object
Overview
Kia ora! I'm Sylvia Burgess, a self-taught jeweller and weaver from Tāmaki Makaurau.
I've been accepted into the Estonian Academy of Arts Master's of Craft Studies, a highly competitive and uniquely singular course. Historically, EKA has only admitted four international students per intake, and a total of ten students for this program.
Why Craft Studies in Estonia?
The Estonian Academy of Arts offers an unparalleled curriculum for Craft Studies, emphasizing interdisciplinary learning through studio and research-based approaches. The program fosters learning from both supervisors and peers, providing substantial support alongside the freedom to explore creative research. Estonia is renowned globally for its robust support of crafts and the arts, boasting a vibrant creative community. Studying in Tallinn will immerse me in this dynamic environment of contemporary and traditional crafts.
What Will I Do There?
I've long recognized that many of the craft traditions I draw upon, particularly in weaving, stem from cultures beyond my own. This disconnect is something I aim to bridge. While I've conducted extensive research in Aotearoa, accessing the craft traditions of my Dutch, British, and Irish heritage remains challenging. Studying at EKA will offer proximity to these traditions and abundant resources for exploring my ancestral roots. I intend for this journey to be a pathway to decolonization, enabling me to engage in meaningful cross-cultural exchanges, a theme I will explore in my thesis.
Why Do I Need Funding?
EKA does not provide scholarships to incoming students. Instead, subsidies from the Estonian government cover course fees, making the program affordable. However, additional financial support is crucial as EKA does not subsidize living expenses or travel costs to Estonia. Given the competitive admissions process and the university's policy against deferment, this opportunity may be my only chance to attend this esteemed program.
How Will I Use the Funding?
The $5,000 will primarily cover the remaining cost of my second semester's study fees, ensuring financial stability for the year and relieving the burden on my current savings. Additionally, it will allow me to invest in necessary materials and workshop memberships for my coursework. Moreover, it will contribute towards my living expenses while studying in Tallinn.
Thank you for your invaluable support. I deeply appreciate it, and I extend my gratitude to Boosted for backing this campaign.
Project Updates
We did it!!! Thank you!
Thank you so much everyone!
I'm so deeply grateful and overwhelmed by the support I have received! I feel so held by community, and ready to take the plunge into studies in Estonia!
Thank you all so much! I still can't fully believe it.
I am now pushing for my stretch goal! This means I can still receive donations and all extra funds will help cover materials costs, workshop use fees, and ensure I can cover emergency costs. If you know of anyone who think would still want to donate, please share the word.
Thank you so much again to everyone who has donated! I feel beyond lucky. I can't wait to bring back everything I have learned to Aotearoa.

Thank you to all!
