Overview

LOLOMA The Short Film

Loloma, meaning "love" in Fijian, is a 10 minute drama comedy about elderly Fijian woman, Margaret. She is heartbroken and depressed after the loss of her husband. Unsure about how to live life without him and in an effort to honour his memory, she wrestles with the decision to embark on a nationwide train trip.

With this story, we explore the loneliness and isolating parts that our elderly community falls subject to. We pose the question "and then she was alone, where does all the love go?".

We are Fijian and Māori storytellers. Our creative team consists of three core performing arts practitioners: writer & director Esther Louise, producer Olivia Brinkmann and cinematographer Isaac Newcombe. Loloma is an opportunity to celebrate our elders, where we come from, and share the language and culture of Fiji with our audience.

This short film has special meaning for writer and director, Esther Louise. Loloma is a love letter to her dearest friend, her Grandmother. After the loss of her Papa, Esther observed the ways in which her Nana was forced to confront life without him and how in this place of grief, new parts of herself came to the surface; a different kind of independence and candidness.

Our Boosted x Moana campaign

We're on a mission to raise $5,500. For every dollar up to $2,000 we raise, Boosted Arts will match us. With them, your support can go even further.

Filming of this production will take place from the 4th - 7th November. Money raised will pay off the following budgeted costs for the production:

  • Fuel costs: $900
  • Accomodation costs: $1,800
  • Food costs: $1,000

$1,300 from our Boosted x Moana funding campaign will go towards reducing the post-production costs:

  • Editing, colour grading, sound mixing: $3,500

The final $500 of our raise will go towards Boosted Art's 10% revenue share agreement.

We want to express our gratitude to Boosted Arts and The Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi for choosing Loloma as one of 2023's Boosted x Moana match-fund recipients. Their support, and yours, will make a significant impact on our creative journey, enabling us to bring our vision to life and continue contributing to the performing arts community.

Loloma Levu,

Esther, Olivia & Isaac
