Overview
Ka’a girls are the worst of the worst - the drunks, the cheeky, the sluts, the whores, and ultimately, the ones whose families wish would just shut up and go away. “Don’t be like her. She’s a Ka’a girl.” Where do Samoan girls go when their dreams are outside of the strict rules their families put in place for them? What becomes of the Pacific girls who talk too loud? Laugh too much? Are out all the time? Who dream of lives beyond what their ancestors sacrificed for them?
ABOUT THE KA'A THE MIXTAPE
Ka’a is a term often weaponised against young Samoan women to stop them from partying, exploring sexuality, venturing outside of white collar careers, and voicing their opinions - all things which are deemed “unhonourable”. While men are allowed to have “Ka’a” be accepted as a part of who they are, Samoan women are often forced to choose between agency over their lives, or connection to their families/ culture. The consequences can be very concrete; many women exploring sexuality get excommunicated from churches, thrown out of their homes, or, in my case, publicly harassed both online and in person.
INTRODUCING KA'A: THE CONCERT EXPERIENCE
The experience of being a “Ka’a” comes with its own world of emotion and context - it’s not enough to expect the audience to understand through a normal gig or a release of the mixtape. We want to build the world of the Ka’a girl, and put the audience in their shoes.
We spent two years developing this Concert Experience through our initial development show at Basement Theatre. Through a string of self-funded shows we experimented with Concert techniques: wall to wall visuals, choreographed routines, multimedia and lighting design. Now, we want to build the full world at Māngere Arts Centre, and make this show accessible as possible for young Ka’a girls all around Auckland who resonate with the message.
We’re collaborating with Vincent Farane (Black Grace) & NappyBoyz Dance Crew, the Astronauts as our backline, Production from Pilot Productions, Production support from Mandascu and multimedia from Hard Luck Design to bring our Concert Experience to life.
Your generous assistance means we can cover:
- ALL Personnel involved in bringing this show to life
- Production Costs (Lighting & multimedia)
- Venue Hire
- That 10% fee that Boosted rightfully takes from this campaign
