International Waters
Susan Frykberg | Music
Overview
I have an artist's residency at SCANZ 5015:water*peace in New Plymouth, where artists, technologists and indigenous leaders come together to dialogue and create art works on the topic Water and Peace. I'm working on the first of my 'New Zealand Waters' Projects. I've collected recordings of water from Canada, New Zealand and Australia - the three countries I've lived - from friends, from an internet call and from my own library.
Using sections from these many hours of recordings, I'm creating a sound-story of about fifteen minutes, by editing, mixing and looping a huge variety of water sounds - the gentle sound of a canoe paddling in a pristine Canadian wilderness; the raging roar of a waterfall; cyclical rhythms from waves; a tinkle of water drops and rainfall of all kinds - gentle, steady or a downpour. These will then be combined with voice and music and used to interact with the images of Claire Brunet - www.clairebrunet.com - to create a sound and light projection.
Funds acquired will be used for travel and meals during the two week residency, and SCANZ will match your donations up to 20%.
I've had years of experience in sound art, electroacoustic and vocal and instrumental composition. I'm recipient of many commissions from Canada, New Zealand and Australia, recently from RMIT Art Gallery in Melbourne Australia. I've also just received received an honorable mention from the IAWM (New Zealand Alliance for Women Musicians), Search For New Music 2014. You can hear excerpts of my music and soundart and find out more about me on Earsay.
