Overview

Kia ora e te whanau ✨

Welcome to the HOME project. A social experiment that morphed into an art project that then got made into a short documentary called HOME.

"The activism in my art and the art in my activism is ignited. Tihei Mauri Ora!"

WHAT IS HOME?

HOME tells the story of Teiti. A Mana Wahine born in the late 60's. Well travelled. Loves to have a lil job. Fiercely independent. But, Teiti finds herself priced out of market rents in a suburb she first moved to in the mid 90's. The Island Bay.

Teiti decides to take matters in to her own hands. She has the best ultra lightweight camping gear. She loves sleeping outside under dark skies. Where she feels most at HOME. She has an ebike and bicycle trailer to get herself around. Teiti decides to live outside. As a responsible freedom camper. Leaving no trace. Putting the care of the whenua before her own need to occupy.

HOME is a short documentary shot over five months. Of summer. Featuring the stunning shore line, parks and suburban gardens of the South Coast of Pōneke. Following the journey of a Mana Wahine. Peacefully resisting the high cost of living and unsustainable market rents. Teiti uses the language of art to deliver her message of activism. She reveals her heart, her spirit. Her unwavering love for her people. But, most especially, her love for her Wairua Whanau gone to the Stars.

"As Tangata Whenua we must never feel lost or ashamed on our own lands. Systems of poverty and oppression must be rejected. These systems were not of our own making".
