OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME - HELP MOLLY TRAVEL TO PERFORM ON SHAKESPEARE’S GLOBE STAGE
Molly Powell | Theatre
Overview
‘We are such stuff as dreams are made on.’ William Shakespeare’s: The Tempest, Act V Scene I
24 young people from around Aotearoa have been selected to perform at The Globe Theatre as apart of the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company 2024 in London.
My name is Molly Powell, I am 18 years old from New Plymouth, Taranaki, and I am one of these 24. I first began participating in the SGCNZ University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival (UOSWSF) in 2020, and since then I have been hooked on all things Shakespeare. The UOSWSF was my first immersion into the world of Shakespeare and his works, and through SGCNZ programmes I’ve met some of my best friends and had the opportunity to do what I love most - THEATRE! My passion for all things theatre is evident through my involvement in the New Plymouth theatre community, performing and directing at my high school, Sacred Heart Girls’ College NP and in community theatre companies; StageCentre and Limelight Drama. The knowledge and experience I have gained from participating SGCNZ programmes is infinitely valuable to me and I hope to share it with others, in my community in New Plymouth and as I go on to study Theatre and Media Studies at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington in 2024.
After the past three years of participating in the national festival, I was selected as one of 48 students around Aotearoa to participate in the SGCNZ National Shakespeare School’s Production (NSSP), a 9-day intensive in Wellington focused around connecting, learning, performing and of course SHAKESPEARE! After completing the life-changing week, I was selected, along with 23 others to be a member of the SGCNZ Young Shakespeare Company, that travels to London in July 2024 on the trip of a lifetime to rehearse and perform on Shakespeare’s stage; The Globe Theatre.
This is an opportunity to pursue my passion in theatre and performing that I could never pass up, let alone travelling across the globe for over 2 weeks to perform on The Globe with 23 others who have quickly become like family. However, the highest estimated cost of this trip is estimated at $11,000 and need help with funding. So I look to the people - I am creating this page with the campaign goal of $3,000 in hopes of funding what would cover the majority of the cost of Airfares. I call on those who would be willing to help my journey to perform on Shakespeare’s Globe Stage.
Any donation means everything in my pursuit of passion - thank you for the support!
