He Rito
He Rito | Multi Discipline
Overview
He Rito follows the hands of four rangatahi Māori artists who reconnect to and work with harakeke. As their practice enters into Te Whare Pora, they enhance their connection to place, te taiao, and to their whakapapa - promoting this journey through community based wānanga. Through wānanga we strengthen our relationships to others, to this whenua, and to our ancestors. We share and learn significant mātauranga and create a safe space to do so. Harakeke is explored through photography, sound and textile design which respond to notions of kaitiakitanga, reclamation and knowledge transmission.
The funding received will have a huge impact on the artists and the exhibition as the funding they were set to be given for artist wages and exhibition costs was recently cut. Due to this unexpected turn we have had to adjust our budget significantly: impacting the purchasing of materials, the final output of the exhibition plans and our position as full time working/studying artists.
We appreciate anyone who has just taken the time to read our crowdfunding campaign and again hugely grateful for any support/contribution. We hope ‘He Rito’ finds you on your journey and that the work we’ve created both inspires, uplifts or connects to you.
