Overview

MAP is raising funds for our new studio!

76 Hawdon Street is becoming our studio home and we want to invest in our community in this space for long term impact. We have been so excited to create a hub for our mahi and to introduce our In-House Program at this studio, and we invite you to support us in developing, upgrading, and fitting out this wonderful space.

Who we are

Movement Art Practice creates space for movement makers to flourish in Ōtautahi.

We believe in an Aotearoa where contemporary dance and performance is woven into the cultural fabric of our community.

We run community dance classes, artist residencies, community and corporate workshops, and present the annual Ōtautahi Tiny Performance Festival.

MAP is the only not-for-profit dance organisation in Te Waipounamu that offers class, professional development, performance, and research opportunities to contemporary dancers and performance practitioners.

What are we funding for?

  • Supporting our In-House Artist program and The MAP Sessions events
  • Upgrading our sound system and acoustic panels in the studio
  • Installing a black curtain to enable the studio to be used as a black box for rehearsal purposes
  • Designing and purchasing signage for the outside of the building
  • Paying off the beautiful dance floor and studio mirrors
  • Helping MAP keep doing our amazing work for the contemporary dance and performance community of Ōtautahi

Community Dance Classes

Our classes connect participants with their creative and physical bodies and are the foundation of our community. We were able to swiftly move to an online offering during lockdown and this year we have introduced Kids Creative Dance to our timetable.

Movement Labs

These workshops connect the local dance community with ideas and processes of guest artists. The labs provide intensives for local practitioners, teachers, students and community dancers. Participants gain professional development, insight into the artists' work and process and opportunities for the artists to connect and promote their work. Our Spring Movement Lab 2020 was held at the Ron Ball Studio at the CSO within the Christchurch Town Hall complex. The lab was led by Matthew and Benedikte Onarheim-Smith. Our Autumn Lab will be held by Josie Archer.

Research Exchange: Digital and Distanced Dance Potentialities

In August 2020 we ran our annual Artist in Residence Program in response to the realities for all artists in light of Covid-19. We are looking to run the Research Exchange this August, inviting 3 artist collectives to research their work in Ōtautahi.

Dance studio and hub for contemporary dance and performance in Ōtautahi

In February 2021 MAP moved into 76 Hawdon Street. This has allowed us to house all our classes, programs and events under one roof. This has strengthened the tangible sense of community that MAP creates.

In-House Studio Program

Local, independent artists pay a small weekly sub to rent the space to train, research, rehearse, and develop their work. In addition, we present The MAP Sessions, a monthly platform for these artists and local performance practitioners to share their works-in-progress, supporting audience engagement and requesting critical feedback as they develop their work.

MAP Quarterly Publication

Edited by Robyn Jordaan with contributions from artists and our community.

Capacity and Capability Building

Given the challenges for MAP operationally in 2020 due to Covid-19, MAP took the opportunity to develop capacity and capability of the organisation in terms of Marketing and Communications and Funding Strategies.

We are delighted to have the opportunity to be one of ten Ōtautahi arts organisations as part of this match-funded Boosted campaign throughout June.
