The Details

Frenemies, betrayals, and nemeses—just your average prom night!

Gauntlet Prom is an original New Zealand Musical from Kaia Costanza-van Den Belt and Nemesis Productions blending the thrill of superpowered rivalries with the emotional rollercoaster of high school life. Set at Pinnacle Academy, a prestigious institution where students must choose between a track in heroism or villainy, the stakes are high. Their ultimate goal? To attract sponsors who will secure their path to fame and glory.

But what's a hero or a villain without their perfect rival?

The highlight of the academy's social calendar is prom - not intended for romance, but for publicly challenging one's chosen nemesis by throwing down a gauntlet. The story follows four students, including the academy's top hero and villain, as they prepare for this fateful evening. Amidst betrayals, shifting alliances, and moments of self-discovery, they confront the complexity of the hero-villain binary.

Gauntlet Prom is a campy, glittery, and emotionally charged 50-minute musical adventure. The show promises to deliver super-teen drama, high-energy nemesis challenges, and plenty of laughs. This new work has never been performed before, and its debut at NZ Fringe 2025 will be a development season. The Impact

Gauntlet Prom aims to empower and amplify diverse voices in the Wellington theatre scene by creating a platform for female, non-binary, queer, neurodivergent, disabled, and POC artists to shine, both onstage and off. This production aims to foster an inclusive environment where creativity thrives, allowing theatremakers of different experience levels to collaborate and challenge traditional narratives. By blending the thrill of superpowered rivalries with the complexities of identity, Gauntlet Prom celebrates the strength of diversity while redefining what it means to be a hero—or a villain. Together, our team is building a space where authenticity and representation take center stage.
