Overview
What is our project about?
Having formed in summer 2021, making waves on the festival circuit, Boomtown is New Zealand’s ONLY live hip-hop band, featuring horn driven funk lines, heavy rhythms and conscious lyrics. We make music that is relatable, honest and true to the golden-era of hip hop.
This summer we’re going on tour! With festival bookings already in place, we are hoping to expand the tour by bringing the experience to a town near you.
Bringing it back for the culture!
With your help, we aspire to spread the unifying and positive elements that the culture of hip-hop was built upon, not only through the music but also through the messages within. We released ‘The Student’ on May 6th which debuted at no.2 on the RDU top ten and closes out Big Sima’s ‘Stereotypes of a Polynesian Misunderstood’ album as the final track.
The band has now begun the process of recording an original EP, combining live instrumentation, vinyl-dug sampling and some amazing feature artists, held together by Big Sima’s patented, insightful articulations of life through the art of rhyme.
Help us make it happen
So far, we have been making things work on a shoestring budget - we’ve recorded over half the EP, produced our own video content and utilised all of our available funds to travel from our scattered locations to rehearse and record. With your generous contribution we will be able to cover the costs of:
- Mixing and mastering
- Merchandise (which will generate profitable revenue to reinvest)
- Tour-related costs
- Visuals and creative
Thank you so much for your support!

About Big Sima & Boomtown
Boomtown came together in 2021, bringing a group of musicians together from around Aotearoa in Blenheim or ‘Boomtown’ as it’s somewhat ironically (but definitely affectionately) known. The group was initially assembled for the ‘Summer Sounds’ festival in Marlborough but after an epic response from the attendees and decidedly good vibes all-round the crew decided to continue to make music together.
Headed by industrious and energetic MC Big Sima, already an established artist on the live scene in his own right, Boomtown brings an eclectic mix of horn-driven funk, soul and hip hop layered under relentless rhymes and cadences from one of NZ’s best live Mcees.
The band has a large sound, featuring between 7 and 9 members - the full lineup features 2 vocalists, drums, percussion, bass, keys, guitar and a horn section. The group plays a variety of original music along with interpretations of classic hip hop instrumentals with original rhymes over the top. In this sense, the band somewhat emulates the sound of a dj mixing different beats for an MC in the style of the original block parties.
For the band, this is a natural evolutionary cycle, as funk bands were originally sampled by hip-hop producers who are now having their sound reinterpreted by live bands such as Boomtown.
STAY TUNED, we have a pop up show planned in CHCH in JUNE…(more details soon!!)!
