Flying Solo - An anthology of creative writing about the experience of solo parenthood in Aotearoa New Zealand
Jenny (JCL) Purchase | Literature
Overview
FLYING SOLO is a collaborative community book project which will feature the creative work of approx. 40-50 new, emerging, and established writers, creatives, and New Zealand identities on the theme of single parenting in Aotearoa New Zealand.
The concept for this publication models recent, similar, themed anthologies such as Black Marks on the White Page, Bonsai, Purākau, Scorched, A Clear Dawn, Somewhere a Cleaner and A Kind of Shelter, all of which have been enthusiastically received, proving that themed anthologies are not only popular, but also provide an excellent opportunity for a diverse range of writers and creatives to get into print.
Flying Solo intends to treat the experience of solo/single parenting from a variety of different points of view, offering a cross section of material from Aotearoa's diverse ethnic communities and different demographics, in order to represent the voices of parents/grandparents/matua, offspring/rangatahi, and others who wish to creatively illuminate the topic, including, possibly, educators, doctors, social workers, researchers and so on.
Similarly, a variety of genres — short fiction, poetry, essay, memoir and creative non-fiction — will be included to provide a varied, diverse, rich, rewarding reading experience.
The theme of solo parenting in Aotearoa New Zealand has not yet been creatively treated or anthologised, so the project selectors and publisher believe a niche market exists for an anthology on this topic.
Writers JCL Purchase and AJ Woolf will be curating the content and Lasavia Publishing's amazing creative team will be designing and publishing the book.
We hope to raise most of the funding needed to publish this important and substantial book through grant applications. However, WE NEED YOUR HELP TO ENSURE ALL OUR CONTRIBUTORS RECEIVE FAIR PAYMENT FOR THEIR CREATIVE WORK. WITH SO MANY CONTRIBUTORS INVOLVED, WITHOUT HELP THE PROJECT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GO AHEAD.
Corporate donations would also be most welcome and acknowledged.

SOLO MUM JESS YOUNG FROM TIMARU READS HER POEM 'THE DPB'
Jess Young is a solo mum from Timaru, South Island, who has raised two daughters on her own with the support of her caring, extended family. She is recovering from Covid at the moment, so we are thrilled to have her read her moving poem for us today. It's about applying for the DPB as a young mum in desperate circumstances, with a toddler and a newborn in tow.
