The Project

The global corona virus pandemic has effected us all, and community arts projects such as ours, Ethno New Zealand, is no exception. Funding streams have been tightened and we are now needing to turn to the general public to make sure we can:

  • offer fair pay to our artistic mentors (all professional artists and musicians)
  • provide quality food to our participants
  • transport people

By supporting Ethno New Zealand you are participating in a social change action!

Ahakoa he aha te rākau he hua kei roto

No matter the species of tree, each bears its own unique fruit – Celebrate diversity.

Ethno New Zealand nurtures young musicians to explore the different stories, songs and cultures of their neighbours and themselves. The products of the week-long exchange include a professional recording and two public concerts showcasing both music shared and learned by the diverse body of musicians as well as original compositions reflecting the cultural connections and journeys of the group. These will communicate the project’s underlying kaupapa: traditional knowledge sharing for meaningful intercultural dialogue and community wellbeing.

Ethno New Zealand's goal is to create understanding and respect among young people from different cultural communities in New Zealand ( and normally globally) contributing to a more collaborative and peaceful environment and community wellbeing through recognition and cultural empowerment.

Ethno New Zealand 2021 will take place at Piritahi Marae on Waiheke Island between January 23-31, 2021, culminating in two public performances in Auckland Central (tbc) and at Auckland Folk Festival in Kumeū.

Things that are already happening:

  • We have run three Ethno Workshops in three cities across the North Island
  • We secured scholarships due to our strong relationships with Refugees as survivors, Auckland Folk Festival, Ethno World and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.
  • We are very excited to see that the word is getting out about our kaupapa, we have returnees and new signups already for our 2021 camp, all from our diverse communities here in Aotearoa.

We are committed to building our capacity in anticipation for post pandemic times, when we will be able to connect those who are keen to the wider global Ethno World networks as well as building connected musical communities here in Aotearoa.
