The Project

E Rangi Rā is a short film about a child's love for their parents after they are separated following the attack of Ngāpuhi on Te Whānau a Hinerupe during the 1800s.

The attack of Ngāpuhi on Te Whānau a Hinerupe came shortly after Europeans introduced muskets to Aotearoa, enabling significant bloodshed. Growing up in Te Araroa I was told this story from a young age. For my whānau, the impact of the attack remains fresh with sadness and pain to this day.

In E Rangi Rā, the title character - Rangi is a young girl with authority and power, she is smart and somewhat sassy. Rangi begins her adventure with her mother being captured by Ngāpuhi, during this journey she meets a young boy named Hiwa who has become lost, Rangi helps Hiwa and they fall in love.

I have three main goals for this film.

  • To inspire creative Māori to venture into this beautiful art form of storytelling through film.
  • To provide this story as a resource for the next generation.
  • To be able to give back to my people. By shooting this film at home I am able to bring my cousins, aunties and uncles on set to experience the creation of a professional film, as well as being able to give a platform for the many stories shared at home.

We need your help to make this film. We need to raise $6,000 to make this short film possible, with funds going towards camera gear, crew, travel and accommodation.

Please help fund this film so that our stories may live on and never be lost.

E Rangi Rā is part of the Ngā Pakiaka Incubator Project (NPIP). NPIP was developed by Māoriland during Lockdown to support rangatahi filmmakers to produce their first professional short films. The first eight in NPIP are Aree Kapa, Oriwa Hakaraia, Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne, Kararaina Ngatai-Melbourne, Te Waiarangi Ratana, Bailey Poching, Tiana Trego Hall and Te Mahara Tamehana. All eight filmmakers have personal creative goals to become feature filmmakers and share Indigenous stories on the big screen. Under NPIP, this talented rangatahi have received one-on-one mentorship from industry experts from across the Indigenous filmmaking sector, craft development opportunities, workshops, and industry placements. With your help, NPIP will grow Aotearoa's film industry with;

  • Eight new short films from rangatahi Māori directors
  • 24 rangatahi receiving on set training
  • Two rangatahi Producers (Māori & Sāmoan)
  • Two reo Māori films
  • Pilot for Māori web-series (Manu Masters)
  • Proof of concept for rangatahi Māori feature film (Ruarangi)
