The Project

THE KAUPAPA

As this is a documentary series, we acknowledge that we are using the stories of real people in order to tell our story and share our perspective on immigrants living in Aotearoa. We’d like to acknowledge and thank everyone who has contributed to our project for their generosity towards making our vision come to life.

‘Our Aotearoa’ (formerly known as ‘Destination Diaspora’) is an animated documentary series that explores immigrants' personal experiences living in Aotearoa. Each episode is a small window into the life of our three contributors and their journeys acclimatizing to a new culture and environment.

Each episode consists of a different style of animation that interweaves our overarching theme of embracing and acknowledging the diverse cultures that thrive on this great whenua.

The series explores themes of racism, discrimination, loss, loneliness, and how one maintains their cultural ties while being in another country. We want to show these themes and their connections to communities in Aotearoa: A thriving immigrant nation that houses cultures from across the globe.

As an immigrant nation, there is very little representation of multiculturalism in Aotearoa within mainstream media. We believe that with this project we hope to open a dialogue for more diverse representations of Aotearoa - the one we know, Our Aotearoa

WHY US?

As a team, we are a diverse group of creatives who bring our various whakapapa to this project. This is a driving force to create Our Aotearoa. It brings to life our stories, the stories of our friends, the stories of our whanau as we make sense of Aotearoa as our tūrangawaewae, our place to stand.

DIRECTOR - MONICA

As the daughter of a Pākehā mother and Chilean father, growing up with these two vastly different cultures has led to many identity crises throughout my life; I have witnessed the struggles of my immigrant father who tried to support a family, meanwhile understanding the privileges of my Pākehā ancestry. I have also dealt with my own immigrant journey when I moved to Singapore and Australia at a young age then later to Germany. Now, moving back to Aotearoa I am slowly rediscovering where I stand here after living abroad for over fourteen years. I personally connect to these stories as I see pieces of my own journey and the journey of my whānau within them. This contribution to understanding the experiences of immigrants is why I believe this is such an important topic to explore.

PRODUCER - DAYOON

I have been living in New Zealand for seven years, as an international student from Korea. Topics such as racism and identity crises deeply resonate with me, as does the constant struggle with loneliness, feeling isolated, and a sense of belonging. I am going through my own journey to find where I stand between different cultures. This project, and the stories coming from it, parallels my story, the one I always wanted to tell.
