Overview

I'm challenging the fashion industry by seeking a new and commercially viable way of producing more eco friendly clothing. I'm designing a surf friendly swimwear collection that is cut from a tessellating pattern so that no waste is created. I will be using a high tech recycled nylon made by Econyl and this is the reason for my needing funding. The minimum length they sell is a roll of 70m per colour. Each roll will cost me approx $800 and I would like at least 4 colours.

Once the collection is made I will be displaying it, alongside the production process in galleries throughout Aotearoa. The fabric in itself is art, the tessellations of the zero waste patterns are beautiful on their own, the print and their colours are visually pleasing and overall, actually wearing the piece, feeling the quality, understanding the craftsmanship from the inside out, appreciating the fit and using the garment as a tool, as a billboard, as a piece of art which you flaunt, which you talk about. The consumer will never see it as just another piece of clothing, as they know why they have this piece. They understand the entire production process and the reason that it was made in this way. It's a conversation starter which comments on the Worlds current situation. It's proof of a better way in which we can and should be doing things. It's simple, it's functional and it's beautiful.
