Creative Indulgence

WHAT IS THIS EXHIBITION?

'Creative Indulgence' is an upcoming multi-media exhibition in the galleries at Estuary Arts Centre in Orewa, New Zealand, between the 5th and 30th of June, a curation of visual art explorations produced as a result of 'artistic escapism' by Anna Deacon. Exhibits range from portrait and mechanical photography to life drawing, oil painting, watercolours, weaving, tapestry and sculpture. 

WHO AM I

I have worked as a Lead Costume Pattern Drafter for International film & theatre for over 27 years. Last year, I also became a Research Associate with the Auckland Museum after researching numerous heirloom textiles hidden within the museum archives as part of my Master's in Historical Costume through Arts University Bournemouth UK [distant learning]. With such a busy life, taking time out to explore artistic mediums has not only become a creative indulgence but also a much-needed therapeutic escape. 

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

I will share the 'process' alongside the final pieces in this exhibition, as many mediums have been my first explorations in utilising them. I want to inspire others to experiment beyond their comfort zone with artistic media and techniques, go beyond that stage we all know of as 'ugh, that's not working', and push past to continue developing. In conjunction with the exhibition, I hope to present a series of insightful talks / Q&As about my art, the Master's research and creating costumes within film.

WHY AM I SEEKING FUNDING?

For me, this exhibition is an indulgence! 

It will be my first solo exhibition of my artwork that has been ferreted away over the years, hidden within the depths of my workshop.

I have been able to undertake my Master's through a scholarship from AUB, and additionally, I won the Geoffrey Squire Memorial Bursary 2023 to assist with my research methodologies. Needless to say, I have been a diligent student for the past two years!
