Cool Behaviour

Ava Diakhaby (Flaps, ATC's Boys) and Frith Horan (Mating in Captivity, Album Party) present Cool Behaviour; a ludicrously funny and wonderfully bizarre sketch comedy show that examines what it actually means to be 'cool'. Why do we adopt certain 'cool' behaviours? Why must we spend our lives trying to be top dog, trying to out-perfect each other? Isn't it all a bit ridiculous? We think so.

There will be excellent acting, song, dance, and probably some Beyoncé in there somewhere. Join us on the race towards some sort of unattainable perfection, will we get there? Will we even get close? Who knows, but goddammit we're going to try.

Cool Behaviour is two women, examining the human condition, and trying to get everyone to realise how little it matters to be 'cool' or 'amazing' or 'perfect' in this world. Maybe we can release a little pressure, bring a little joy and light up people's lives for a night through silliness.

Why are we making this show?

We are living in a time where people all over the world are starting to stand up and say "actually, I don't have to live a certain way, I can live my way. I can do what makes me happy and I don't have to follow another person's set of rules. I don't have to put up with crap that makes me unhappy" - this is what our show will celebrate.

What do we need money for?

We are raising funds to present this original work for 3 nights only in Q Theatre's Vault space at the 2018 Auckland Fringe Festival. Money raised will go towards marketing (poster/flyer printing and online advertising), venue hire, costume and props.

Who are we?

Frith Horan - Actor/Writer

Frith is a 2013 graduate of Toi Whakaari's acting program. After relocating to Auckland, she began devising her own theatre work including the wonderfully trashy pop-musical: The Best Possible Album Party That Anybody Has Ever Been To and Callback: Behind Frenemy Lines, both performed at The Basement Theatre.

Other theatrical highlights include the last year's Auckland University Outdoor Summer Shakespeare's production of The Tempest, directed by Benjamin Henson and staged at the Pop Up Globe; Last Tapes Theatre Company's Mating in Captivity, by Oliver Page; and the return season of FLAPS, a devised piece with the all-female Bits and Pieces Ensemble. This year, Frith was a member of the Fortune Theatre Company in Dunedin, appearing as Viola in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, and Red Riding Hood's Granny in Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods.

Frith was also one of four writers of the original show, Bravado!, directed by Nomi Cohen and Benjamin Henson, performed by an ensemble of emerging young artists as part of Auckland Theatre Company's Next Big Thing festival at the Basement Theatre last year.

Ava Diakhaby - Actor/Writer

Ava Diakhaby is a 2015 graduate of Unitec's Bachelor of Performing and Screen Arts, majoring in Acting. Ava has delved into the devising process with shows FLAPS (2016) and returned season of FLAPS Retouched (2017) with Bits and Pieces ensemble, and The PlayGround Collective's Wellington Season of The Rime of The Modern Mariner, directed by Robin Kerr (2016).

Other theatre credits include; BOYS, ATC Here and Now, directed by Julia Croft and Eleanor Bishop (2017) The Tempest, Auckland University's Outdoor Summer Shakespeare directed by Benjamin Henson staged at the Pop up Globe.

Alice Kirker - Producer

Alice Kirker is a 2015 graduate of Unitec's Bachelor and Performing and Screen Arts, majoring in Production Design and Management. She co-owns the Bits and Pieces Ensemble theatre company, which has had two sell out seasons of FLAPS (2016), and return season FLAPS Retouched (2017). She is also a co-producer of the monthly storytelling event The Watercooler.

She assists on many other creative projects in Auckland, and will be working on everything from dance shows to original scripts in 2018, starting with Cool Behavior.
