The Project

Māpura studios is a creative space and art therapy centre located in central Auckland with satellite groups in other areas. We work with over 200 adults and children a week, offering art classes and art therapy programmes for people living with disability and diversity, we are the only organisation contracted to deliver art therapy programmes to inmates at Auckland Prison.

We employ professionally qualified arts tutors and arts therapists who are experienced in working with people with disabilities, passionately believe that health and well-being is positively impacted by engaging in creative activities, and many are practicing artists in their own right.

This year marks our 20th anniversary. We had big plans for a huge celebration exhibition this year that would have promoted our artists, boosted public awareness of what we do and garnered much needed funds. We have had to cancel it, we are down, but not out! We are hatching new plans and diversifying our ideas to make sure our artists can continue to do what they love.

For the artists who come to Māpura Studios, art making gives them access to increased feelings of self-worth, a way to express themselves in ways they otherwise can’t, friendship, and community. We are described as a ‘family’ by many of them, and some have been coming along for over 14 years.

The recent event of Covid-19 has meant many of our regular funders have closed their doors, and we do not receive government funding so we thought we would jump on to Boosted to ask for a hand.

We know you might like to help us.

Any little bit helps.

Here are some of our highest regular costs that you're contributing toward;

  • $50 - to provide quality art materials for one artist, for one term
  • $125 - to help us keep up our comms on social media every week, advocating for our artists and sharing their incredible work to the world
  • $269 - to pay our electricity bill for one month
  • $950 - to allow us to keep printing our brochures and other paperwork needed for grant applications etc – paper media is vital for our community who often cannot access online resources.

Changing lives through creativity is our mission statement, and it is what we do.
