The Project
Help Buzzing Brass Wellington Youth Band Get to the Nationals!
The Buzzing Brass Wellington Band is heading to Christchurch in July 2025 to compete in the National Brass Band Championships! This is a fantastic opportunity for our young musicians to perform on a national stage, challenge themselves, and represent our community with pride. To make this happen, we need to raise $2,000 to help cover some of the cost, we only have 30 days to do it!
We’re using the Boosted crowdfunding platform, which means it’s all or nothing. If we don’t hit our goal, we don’t receive any funding. Every donation, big or small, helps us get one step closer to Christchurch. Please donate and share our campaign with your friends and whanau!
The Team
The Buzzing Brass Wellington Band is a dedicated group of young musicians from Wellington and the Hutt Valley, supported by our senior band the Wellington Brass Band—New Zealand’s top brass band for over a decade.
Our band is a training ground for aspiring brass players, giving them the chance to develop their skills, perform in concerts, and compete at a national level. Our musical director, Buzz, along with a team of passionate mentors, is committed to inspiring the next generation of brass musicians.
The Funding
We are raising $2,000 to help cover the cost of accommodation for our young musicians. Your donations will go towards ensuring our musicians have a safe and comfortable place to stay.
Every dollar goes directly towards helping our band take part in this national competition. If we don’t reach our target, we won’t receive any of the funds – so every donation counts!
The Details
The New Zealand National Brass Band Championships—also known as the Festival of Brass—is the largest brass band event in the country and the oldest national contest in the brass band world, dating back to 1880. This prestigious event brings together bands, small ensembles, and soloists from all over New Zealand, and in 2025, it will take place at the Christchurch Town Hall Complex from July 2–6.
Band Grades
The championship features multiple grades of competition:
🎺 A Grade – Elite championship bands (e.g., Wellington Brass).
🎶 B Grade – High-level community and regional bands.
🥁 C Grade – Developing bands with a mix of experienced and junior players.
🎵 D Grade – Smaller and youth-focused bands, including school and training bands.
🌟 Youth Band Contest – A separate competition for youth bands, running alongside the main event.
Solo & Ensemble Events
Before the band contest, the championships feature solo and ensemble competitions, where players from all grades compete in categories such as:
🎖️ Champion of Champions – The top soloists from across New Zealand.
🎼 Slow Melody & Air Varie – Showcasing technical skill and musicality.
🥁 Percussion Solos & Ensembles – Featuring the best young drummers in the country.
Where We Fit In
The Buzzing Brass Wellington Band will be competing in the D Grade (having previously won the Youth Grade in 2021), performing alongside some of New Zealand’s best up-and-coming bands. In addition, our soloists will be stepping onto the national stage, competing against the top young brass musicians in the country for their age group.
This is an incredible opportunity for our players to gain experience, develop their musical skills, and showcase their dedication to the craft. Months of rehearsals, teamwork, and hard work go into preparing for this event, and we are determined to give it our best.
But we need your support to get there!
The Impact
Music is a powerful force for young and old – it builds confidence, fosters teamwork, and creates lifelong friendships. Competing at the Nationals is not just about the contest; it’s about inspiring the next generation of musicians and giving them a platform to grow.
By supporting this campaign, you’re helping young musicians gain invaluable experience, represent their community, and take their skills to the next level. Many of our players go on to join New Zealand’s top brass bands, and this competition is a stepping stone towards that journey.
Help us make this dream a reality—please donate and share our campaign today!
